Alfonso R.
Medina
September 10, 1930 – February 22, 2024
Alfonso R. Medina, a faithful servant of Christ, and patriarch to a blessed and forever thankful family, has gone home to be with the Lord. He reunites with his recently departed wife, Teresa, and is greeted by all his familia and compadres at the gates of heaven.
Alfonso's story began when he was born to his father, Alfonso Medina Sr., and his mother, Nieves R. Medina, on September 10th, 1930 in Laredo, Texas. He and his family lived and worked there until 1940, when they moved to San Antonio, Texas. Soon, he would meet his one and only, Teresa T. Medina. They would fall in love and become married in May of 1949. They would begin a family that will remember Alfonso for his compassion toward everyone he met, his talents as a musician, his talents as an artist, and his loyalty and devotion to his faith In Jesus Christ. He passed away peacefully, with his daughter Gloria by his side, on February 22, 2024. He was 93 years old.
Alfonso would live his life with a heart full of joy. As a young man, he would learn work ethic from helping his father in the labor fields, picking and sorting cotton, very hard work. But at the same time, he developed an affinity for the guitar, and a love for music that would endure his whole life. He would become an amazing musician, participating in Spanish trios, singing beautiful 'requintos', and rejoicing the Lord while playing in the St. Stephens Catholic Church Spanish Choir from 1970-2017, a span of 47 years. His natural artistic talent would also lead him to a love of ceramic art. He would make a career out of this passion. He would produce clay figures, and paint unfinished pieces into award-winning, museum quality sculptures. And he would share his passion with others, with his time at Laurine Brock Ceramics, House of Ceramics,
and Morningside Ministries. Alfonso also maintained a home business producing ceramics for the community. This is also where he was able to share the joy of painting with his children and many grandchildren. Alfonso loved to have fun. Especially when he was fishing, fixing up his truck, or enjoying the laughs and stories of family cookouts. Later, he would become a valet for Patterson Condominiums until his retirement at age 65. After which, he dedicated his life to Teresa and his family, always generous with his time, his love, and his smile.
Alfonso is preceded in death by his brothers, Trinidad Medina, Augustin Medina; and his sisters, Martha Gomez, Virginia Yanez, and Petra Morales. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Teresa T. Medina, who passed away just one year ago.
Alfonso is survived by his brother, Paul R. Medina; his son, Alphonso T. Medina (Marie); his daughters, Gloria M. Lacy, and Sylvia Rodriguez (David); his 7 grandchildren; his 5 great-grandchildren; by the dozens of his cousins, nieces, and nephews.
We will always honor our father, our Weto. He will be forever missed. We love you always.
