Andrew "Andy"
Garza Galan
August 10, 1942 – May 4, 2021
Andrew "Andy" Garza Galan went to be with the Lord on May 4, 2021 at the age of 78. He was born in San Antonio, TX on August 10, 1942. He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Elvira Galan; brothers Henry, Johnny and Richard; sisters Jesusita "Susie" and most recently Olga Munoz. He is survived by his brother Michael "Mike" G. Galan (Yvonne) and numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.
Andy, as he is known by family and friends, lived for his faith, family and just life in general. He often spoke of the years and great times in his youth that were spent at the boys club where he and his younger Mike and lifelong school friends would hang out nearly everyday. He also umpired many baseball games and officiated many basketball games. He served in the National Guard for short period in his live. He became involved with Th San Antonio Neighborhood Organization (S.A.N.Y.O).
Andy was employed at the Harlandale ISD with the Stinson Vocational Center for many years. After retiring from the district he turned his full attention to the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) at Don Bosco on Mission Rd. He put his heart into serving the CYO and doing the best he could for the kids that came through the CYO to play sorts. He made many friends within the organization and met many city dignitaries and state officials who came to know him on a first name basis. The most memorable experience during his time with the CYO was the trip to Kumamoto Japan, San Antonio's "Sister City" In August of 1988. A memory he always treasured. Shortly after losing his sight, Andy retired from the CYO and moved forward to serve a short time with San Antonio Independent Living Services (S.A.I.L.S). He and his sister Susie became members of the Commanders House. While there Andy made new friends, learned crafts, how to strum a guitar, play the bongo drums and even do occasional performances throughout the city. he loved having family join him for lunch at the commanders on holidays or just because, or for social events the commanders happened to be celebrating. Hosting "Andy's karaoke hour" once a week using his own Karaoke machine was something he looked forward to. It really saddened him to know he couldn't go to the commander's any longer due to the Covid 19 mandates.
Last but not least Andy loved his San Antonio Spurs and was a loyal fan. He enjoyed attending the games until he couldn't. He also enjoyed going to the Mission Baseball Games and from his wheelchair he would cheer on the team and sing "Take me out to the ballgame" along with the crowd. Andy was a Dallas Cowboy fan all the way and avid new York Yankees Baseball fan.
Andy, thank you for being in our lives. You are very much loved and you will be sorely missed but you will never be forgotten. Always in our hearts.
