In Loving Memory of Armando R. Zapata
Armando R. Zapata: A Life Well-Lived
It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dad, Armando R. Zapata, a beloved father, brother, friend, and colleague who left us peacefully on March 18, 2025, at the age of 78. Armando was born in Matamoros on October 26, 1946, and lived a life filled with hard work and remarkable achievements.
A Journey Through Life
Early Years
Armando spent most of his youth helping his parents, Ciriaco and Petra Zapata, do migrant work
from California to Michigan. In 1956, the family of four, including Rose, settled in San Antonio. Armando was a brother to five siblings (Gracie, Joe, Arturo, Raul, and Johnny). He attended Sidney Lanier High School and graduated with the class of 1967. Armando's early years were marked by limitless curiosity and a love for family, which carried him throughout his life.
Career and Accomplishments
After completing his education, Armando embarked on a military career in the Army. He served in the Army and went to Vietnam from 1967 to 1970. Before leaving the Army, he received the rank of sergeant (E-5). Upon returning to the United States, he did various jobs for his new family, including being a VW mechanic or a cook. It wasn't until he found his passion for being a structural steel draftsman. He first put pen to paper for Mosure Steel, where he was proud of his accomplishment.
After Mosure Steel closed, he found that his services could be used elsewhere. He worked for various companies in San Antonio. He even got to the point where he formed his business called "Zapata Steel Design." Much of his work can still be seen every day. Jobs included Howl at the Moon, McNay Art Museum, Hotel Havana, Renovations at Bowie Elementary, Renovations at Kitty Hawk Middle School, The Arches at South Park Mall, The United States Flag Tower at Sea World, Renovations to City Hall and Plaza Guadalupe 1984.
Family and Personal Life
Family meant everything to Armando. In his first marriage to Mercedes R Zapata in 1967, they built a loving home filled with joy and compassion. Later in life, after divorcing Mercedes, he met his final partner of 30 years, Alicia Ramos.
His devotion was to many who crossed his path, and all on this path became stepbrothers or stepsisters. The Primary family included Armando, Belinda, and Michael, followed by stepbrothers
and sisters Debbie, Patty, Elane, and Robert. We were close to the following family because we have always been close to them: Joe, Liz, and brother in heaven, Paul Llams.
In heaven, he will watch over us, the children, and grandchildren: Indiana, Christopher, Jacob, Nick, Ava, Lexus, Sofia, Jeremy, and great-grandchildren Dominic and John. Other grandchildren are John, Kimberly, Martin JR, Matthew, Mark, Michael, Robert JR, Vincent, Phoebe, and Raden. In his teachings, he tried to instill in everyone the values of kindness, perseverance, and generosity. His home was always welcoming for friends, family, and anyone needing comfort.
Passions and Interests
Armando had a variety of passions that enriched his life and the lives of those around them. They consisted of helping those who needed help and volunteering yearly at the Raul Thanksgiving feast. Armando also dedicated time to volunteering at San Antonio Food Bank, where they made a lasting impact on the community.
Legacy and Remembrances
Armando's legacy is one of love, integrity, and dedication. Those who knew Armando would never forget him with his smile, unwavering support, and the countless moments of happiness he brought into the world. Armando leaves behind a treasured trove of memories that will be cherished forever.
The world has lost a remarkable soul, but Armando's spirit will live on in the hearts of all fortunate to know him. May he rest in peace and continue to inspire us every day.
Rest in Peace, Dad, from your son Armando Antonio Zapata John 14:1-4
