Beatrice Newton Sanchez died on April 24, 2022, at age of 95. She was born on June 17, 1926, in San Antonio.

She is survived by son Samuel Newton Sanchez, daughter Mary Jane Sanchez Gomez, grandson Patrick Lawrence Gomez, sister Olga Diaz, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Beatrice is preceded in death by husband Santos Sanchez, mother Luz Arzola, grandmother Francisca Rodriguez Arzola, uncle Daniel Arzola, brother Ernest Newton, and sister Alicia Palacios.

Beatrice graduated in 1945 from Burbank High School, where she served on the pep squad and marched with them in the Battle of Flowers Parade. In addition to her diploma, she earned an Occupational Training Certificate in Office Practice, awarded at the time by the San Antonio Public Schools System.

Almost immediately upon graduation, Beatrice went to work at Joske's of Texas in San Antonio, where she was employed for 42 years. For 32 of those years she worked in the department store's Central Credit Department. A barrier-breaker as one of the organization's first Hispanic supervisors, she oversaw 45 employees as assistant manager of Credit Authorization.

Beatrice retired in 1987 after Joske's parent company Allied Stores was purchased by Dillard's. She briefly worked for Dillard's, helping the company migrate the Joske's accounts into their system.

After retirement, Beatrice developed a passion for gardening, spending much of her time tending to the many flowers, trees, and hedges she planted in her yard. When not caring for her great-nieces and -nephew, she and Santos spent their senior years taking trips to Mexico, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and New York City.

For the past six years, Beatrice resided with her daughter and her surrogate daughter, Sheila Johnson, in Houston and made several trips to Los Angeles to visit her grandson and his husband, Matt.

A rosary at 9:30 a.m. and mass at 10:15 a.m. will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2002, at St. John Berchmans Catholic Church at 1147 Cupples Rd., San Antonio, TX 78226. Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery No. 2 at 746 Castroville Rd., San Antonio, TX 78237. In lieu of flowers, we ask you donate to The American Heart Association at www.heart.org .
