Bertha Betancourt Martinez, 85, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025. Born on January 6, 1940, Bertha was a cherished figure in her community and a beacon of love and care within her family.Bertha was the beloved wife of the late Gerardo Martinez, with whom she shared over 60 years of marriage. She was the loving mother of Diana Gillis, Gerardo Martinez Jr. (Chato), and Alicia Ramos.Bertha delighted in her role as a grandmother to Roland (Emanuel), Jacqueline Nichole & Fernando Hernandez, and Priscilla and Lauren Ramos. She also treasured her great-grandchildren: Fernando Jr., Angelina, Mateo, Eliana, Paola, and James Jr.
Known for her vibrant personality and selfless nature, Bertha was a devoted Catholic and an active member of her local church. Her life was marked by her commitment to her faith and her community, where she served as a Godmother to over a dozen children. Bertha's home was always filled with the sounds of Celia Cruz, the aroma of her cooking, and the beauty of her garden, which she tended with love and dedication.
In addition to her culinary and gardening skills, Bertha was also an adept seamstress, creating countless cherished items for her grandchildren. She loved trips to the coast, "money saving" shopping at Wal-Mart and late nights at Mi Tierra restaurant. Her stories and wisdom were the glue that held her family together. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, smile and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
Services to honor Bertha's life will be held on Sunday, February 2, 2025, with visitation from 4 pm to 8 pm and a Rosary at 6 pm at Castillo Funeral Home, 520 General McMullen Drive, San Antonio, TX. On Monday, February 3, 2025, the procession will depart from the funeral home at 9 am to St. Dominic Catholic Church, 5919 Ingram Road, San Antonio, TX, where a Mass will be celebrated at 10 am. Interment will follow at San Jose Burial Park, 8235 Mission Road, San Antonio, TX.
Bertha B. Martinez was a remarkable woman whose impact on her family and community will be felt for generations to come. She will be deeply missed.
