Obituary

Carmen Ortiz Elizondo, our beloved mother, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at the age of 89.  She was the loving wife of Eugenio G. Elizondo for 57 years and the mother of six children. She also had four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was born in Zaragoza Coah. Mexico on August 6, 1934 where she lived the majority of her youth and early adulthood. She immigrated with her husband and family to Texas in 1969.  She focused on raising and guiding her children in a new country, serving as the receptionist in her husband's refrigeration business and getting involved in the neighborhood community through her church.

She was an active member of The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she sang in the choir for many years, was a Eucharistic minister, and took part in reading the scriptures during mass. She was also a faithful and devoted Guadalupana where she volunteered countless hours with the church community.

Through other organizations like The University of Texas Health Science Centers, the National Hispanic Leadership Initiative and A Su Salud, Carmen earned certifications on Home Safety Hazards, Gun Safety, Understanding Violence, and Cancer Prevention. She then devoted her time and energy sharing her knowledge throughout her neighborhood.

She is reunited in heaven with her husband, her Parents, Manuel Ortiz Garcia and Rafaela de Luna viuda de Ortiz, her brother Roberto Ortiz de Luna and seven other brothers and sisters.  She is deeply loved and will be forever missed by her children and their spouses/partners, Victor Manuel (Charles P.), Maria del Carmen (John S.), Blanca Rosa (Melba M.), Diana Edith (Andrea E.), Maria Eugenia (Dennis J.), Luis Roberto, and her sister Maria Aurora Ortiz de Luna. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Christopher Roy, Marlena Estelle, Kristen Ileana, Elyse Megan Marie, and three great-grandchildren, Christopher Benjamin, Abigail Jane, Eugene Alexander, and many extended family members.

Carmen was an exemplary wife, mother, and grandmother and will always be remembered for her loving, caring, selfless and giving and nurturing personality.  She was full of joy and made everyone she met feel very special.  Her life will be celebrated during the viewing on Thursday, February 1, 2024 from 4:00pm -6:00pm and Rosary at 6:00pm at Castillo Funeral Home, 520 North General McMullen Drive. A mass will be held in her honor on Friday, February 2, 2024 at 10:00am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 314 Merida St., followed by the Interment Service at San Fernando Cemetery II.
