Obituary

Carmen Vera Leal Anders

July 30, 1935 – August 4, 2020

Carmen Vera Leal Anders, 85 of San Antonio, Texas, passed away after a sudden illness on August 4, 2020. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family, who loved her very much. Her sister, Margarita (Margie) Vera Teran, preceded her in death. Born in Kingsville, Texas, to Israel G. Vera and Margarita Huerta Vera, she attended school and graduated from H.M. King High in 1953. She married Eduardo Leal, Jr. in 1957, and then moved to San Antonio, Texas in the early 1960s to raise their family. She worked from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s at J. T. Brackenridge Elementary School as a nurse's aide and was an active member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.

During the 1980s, Ms. Anders moved back to Kingsville, working first for Dr. Earl Gaston at the Kingsville Clinic, and then spending many years as a teacher's aide with the Kingsville Independent School District. After her retirement, she volunteered at Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg before returning to San Antonio in 2006. Ms. Anders was a kind and beautiful lady, always cheerful and ready with a smile. She was cherished by her family and loved by many friends and extended family. She enjoyed her pets, her plants, and mornings on her porch swing with her coffee.

She is survived by her five daughters: Eleanor Leal Wieters, Elizabeth Leal Gonzalez (Jose G.), Vera Annette Leal Basaldua (Jose M.), Patricia Ann Leal, and Melissa Leal Stone (Lawrence); eight grandchildren: Beverly Camp, Joseph Gonzalez (Veronica), Amanda Garcia, Heather M. Martwick (Aaron), James Garcia, Gabrielle M. Martinez, Roger Dean Martinez, and Jordan Wieters. She also had 10 great-grandchildren: Martin Garcia and Michael Garcia; Hailey Gonzalez and Jovie Elizabeth Gonzalez; Mason Wayne Garcia-Yates; Gabriel Chapa and Jacob Wade Martwick; Jayden Martinez and Christian Martinez Charles; and Eli Holliday Martinez. She is also survived by two sisters: Maria Luisa (Mary Lou) Vera Lopez and Dalila Isabel (Daly) Vera Mascorro (Jose) and numerous nieces and nephews.
