Christina T.
Cantu
July 24, 1922 – September 13, 2020
Christina Trejo Cantú of San Antonio, Texas, entered eternal rest on Sunday, September 13, 2020 at the age of 98. She was born on July 24, 1922 to Leodegario and Catarina Trejo in San Antonio, Texas. She lived through the "great depression" and was part of the "greatest generation" that this country has ever known. Mostly self-educated, she obtained employment as a Civil Service worker for various military installations throughout her career including the U.S. Army Arsenal, Camp Stanley, Camp Bullis, Kelly Air Force Base, and Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas from WWII to the Vietnam era. She was impacted by reduction in force, as WW-II, Korean, and Vietnam wars impacted the civilian workforce. During these hard times she managed to buy a small farm open up a rural convenience store in Atascosa, Texas, and temporarily moved her family to Wisconsin to work as migrant worker. She was a very hard worker.
When Christina was 22, while married Andres Hernandez and had three children Gloria Hernandez, Jose Andres Hernandez and the late Christina H. (late Ruben) Colunga. In 1942, she met Enrique G. Cantu, married in 1953, together they had an additional five children; Irene (Eloy) Ugarte, Elvira C. Arrieta, Ernesto (Debbie) Cantú, Emilio (Irene) Cantú and Manuela (Raymond) Woolley.
She always dedicated her life to being a nurturing, loving and wonderful mother that included her step children as well, the late Enrique Cantú Jr. and the late Evangeline C. Del Rio.
She was always very supportive to all her family members through the many high points and difficulties of their lives. She made it her mission to improve the lives of others.
Christina was very passionate about her Catholic faith and when she wasn't filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found sitting in her rocking chair praying her Rosary or watching her favorite television shows, The Price Is Right, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Even at the age of 98, she dominated playing Bingo and Dominoes with her family and friends. We will miss her dearly.
The family appreciates all the love and support she received from her caretakers. They loved her and became like family especially during our absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She leaves behind a legacy for her children and all her future generations. May we all continue to grow to become better people because of her example.
Christina was preceded in death by her parents, husband Enrique G. Cantú, her daughter Christina H. Colunga. granddaughter Susanne H. Arreguin, and great grandson, Nicholas Alexander Ugarte and Aaron Hearn, and all 5 of her brothers, Seferino and Librado Guerrero, Serapio, Clemente and Lucio Trejo.
She is survived by 7 children, 20 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
