It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for her life that we announce the passing of Consuelo G Chavez, who left this world peacefully on October 14, 2026, at the age of 86. Born in Gonzales, Texas, on October 7, 1940, to Daniel and Elvira Galan, Consuelo's life was a testament to faith, resilience, and unconditional love.
Consuelo was a devoted wife to Lazaro B Chavez, with whom she shared over 25 beautiful years, united in their strong Christian faith. Together, they created a loving and nurturing home, not only for their own family but for countless children as foster parents. Their remarkable dedication to foster care was recognized by the state of Texas, culminating in an unforgettable moment when President Bush honored them with the "Against All Odds" award in Washington.
In her late thirties, Consuelo pursued a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant, balancing her professional life with her role as a foster parent. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her professional life, as she was a cherished member of the Safe Harbor Outreach Church community for many years. Her faith was her guiding light, and she was known for her unwavering strength, her ever-present smile, and her generous heart, always ready to serve and uplift those around her.
Consuelo's life was richly blessed with family. She is survived by her children: Pat Gonzalez and husband Rosendo, John Santos and wife Ruby, Federico Santos and wife Connie, JayCee Chavez, Vanessa Chavez and husband Gonzalo, Genevieve Chavez, Carlos Chavez, and Elizabeth Marie Chavez. Her legacy continues through her 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish her memory.
Preceded in death by many loved ones, including her beloved husband Lazaro, her daughter Maria Elvira Chavez, her sons Jesse Santos and Victor Chavez, her grandbaby Esmeralda R Chavez, and great grandbaby Jeremiah R Aiken, Consuelo's reunion with them brings comfort to those she leaves behind.
A woman of elegance and style, Consuelo loved a good outfit and cherished her collection of jewelry. Shopping was a favorite pastime, but nothing brought her more peace than reading her Bible with a hot cup of black coffee at hand. She firmly believed in the power of prayer, often reminding others to "Pray Until Something Happens."
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Crestway Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for their compassionate care.
A celebration of Consuelo's life will be held on October 20, 2026, at 4:00 PM at Castillo Funeral Home, located at 520 N General McMullen Dr, San Antonio, TX 78228.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Castillo Funeral Home in her memory.
Consuelo G Chavez's life was a beacon of love, faith, and resilience. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
