Obituary

Corina Mendez Grohman peacefully passed away on May 2, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas.

Corina was born on August 29, 1936, in Elmendorf, Texas to her parents Marcelino and Maria Mendez. She attended Lanier High School and later she volunteered with the Lanier Band Booster Club. Corina retired from San Antonio Independent School District with 37 years of service as the Food Service Manager. After decades of friendship and courtship, Corina married the love of her life Leland Grohman; together they enjoyed cattle ranching, classic country music, and the outdoors.

Throughout her life she nurtured a profound and personal connection with her faith. Corina lead a life of service to her family and community. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and teaching her grandchildren cattle ranching. Corina was known for her love of cooking and baking. She enjoyed puzzles, reading, crosswords, and traveling to casinos.

Corina was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leland Grohman; her parents, Marcelino and Maria Mendez; her sisters: Dolly Denny (Robert), Esperanza Mendez, Marie Yamauchi (Seigoro), and Gloria Barrientez (Raymond); and her brothers: Jesse Mendez, Joe Mendez (Stella), Raymond Mendez (Marylou), Rudy Mendez (Cecilia), Marvin Mendez (Guadalupe), Richard Mendez (Maria), Rogers Mendez (Dolores), Alex Mendez, and Arthur Mendez.

Corina survived by her devoted son Michael Dean Mendez (Dianne); five grandchildren: Jackie Garcia-Mendez (Jaqueline), Michael Mendez (Bri), Joseph Mendez (Alexis), Jessica Keutla-Mendez (Necco), and Victoria Cruz; five great-grandchildren: Senovia and Tallulah Garcia-Mendez; Sophia and Shelbi Mendez; Sabali Keutla-Mendez; and would have soon welcomed her sixth great-grandchild to Joseph and Alexis Mendez.

Other survivors include her sister Judy Zaragoza; and brother Lawrence Mendez (Guadalupe); numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Services

Visitation will begin on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 4:00 pm at Castillo Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow 6:00 pm at Castillo Funeral Home. Interment will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026 at 10:00 am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
