David Joseph Lopez of San Antonio, age 70, was called home by the Lord Sunday evening, August 1, 2021. He was born in San Antonio on January 8, 1951, to Margaret Herrera and Phillip G Lopez. David graduated from Burbank High School in 1969 and soon after joined the United States Coast Guard. After serving in the Coast Guard, he returned to San Antonio where he lived the rest of his life.
When David entered heaven, he was reunited with his devoted parents, Margaret and Phillip Lopez, and his loving sister, Margie Bearbower. He is survived by his three children David Joseph Lopez II (Belinda), Margaret "Margie" Lopez, and Patricia "Patsy" Lopez; former wife Christina Lopez and stepchildren Raul Valadez and Tina Gonzalez; seven grandchildren David J Lopez III, Theresa C Lopez, Josiah J Lopez, Ricardo Blanco, Matthew Blanco, Erika Blanco, Joshua J Solis; and five great-grandchildren Brandon, Jayleen, and Jacen Blanco, Joshua and Jaylee Solis.
Also surviving David are siblings Ernie Lopez (Beverly), Phillip Lopez (Terry), Manuel Lopez (Armandina), and Olga "Cookie" Rodriguez (Ramiro).
In high school David excelled in JROTC, rising to the position of Drill Team Commander. His skill in this area was also apparent in the Coast Guard. During Training he was commended for winning the Individual Military Drill Competition several times.
David loved music. He was a talented performer who played by ear. And his talent also included composing music. He was brilliant on piano and guitar. To the delight of those around him, he would often perform impromptu concerts.
Caring for animals was important to David. In the last years of his life, he lived where he was able to feed and look after pets, especially his kitties.
