David
Segovia
June 9, 1957 – February 22, 2022
Rev. David Segovia July 9, 1957 - February 22, 2022
David was born on July 9, 1957 to his parents, Reverend Florentino G. Segovia and Reverend Maria Ortiz Segovia. David was dedicated to the Lord at Betel A/G by his pastor Juan Romero. After graduating from Sidney Lanier High School, David went to San Antonio College and later worked at Ray Ellison as a Home Designer for several years. While working at Ray Ellison, David felt the call to ministry and attended Night Bible School, graduating after 2 years. During this time, David, and his siblings formed a band called "The Last Days" in which he played bass and sang at area churches. At age 25 he decided to quit his job and enrolled in the Latin American Bible Institute (LABI), now Christ Mission College (CMC). While attending LABI, David met his best friend Mabel Navarrete. Right after graduating from LABI, they married on July 6, 1985.
In October of 1986, David and Mabel and their 10-day-old son David Albert (DA) became youth pastors at El Salvador Church. In 1990, they transitioned to One Way Chapel where for 2 years they served as assistant pastors to David's father. In June of 1992, David and Mabel, along with their 2 children DA and Erica, returned to El Salvador Church, but this time as the church's senior pastors. Six years later, they welcomed their last daughter Bethany into their family. David and Mabel enjoyed 30 wonderful years of ministry in El Salvador Church until February 22, 2022 when the Lord called David to his eternal reward.
During his ministry years, David worked with the Gulf Latin American District Youth ministries, as Assistant Presbyter for the East San Antonio Section and later as Presbyter of the same. He taught as an adjunct professor at Christ Mission College for several years. At the time of his passing, he served as the Church Planting Director and as the West Regional Presbyter for the Texas Louisiana Hispanic District.
David was generous with his love, his time and his money. He enjoyed spending time outside gardening, thrifting with his wife, watching the Spurs or the Cowboys with his son DA, spending time with Erica, Beth and Daiquonne joking around with them and allowing them to make fun of him for his West Side accent. He also loved sharing his grandpa jokes with his grandkids June and Paul.
David loved his El Salvador Church congregation; he frequently said that he had the greatest congregation in San Antonio. Every morning, it was his habit to pray with Mabel. He prayed for his children, his church family and any friends or acquaintances that either he or his wife knew needed prayer.
David had the heart of a father. He always sought to encourage those who needed someone to believe that God could use them. David loved his Alma Mater, CMC, especially the students. He would always say that if he had a million dollars, he would donate it all to the school, but since he didn't, he would help as many CMC students as he could with money to pay for mission's trips. He would even donate the pay he would receive from CMC to help with tuition for one of the students from his congregation. His passion was Church Planting and he would spend countless hours on the phone or traveling to meet with people who were starting a church to give them an encouraging word or to find funds to help them get started.
David was known as the "limonada pastor" in San Antonio. Vendors at the Downtown Farmers Market knew him well. Why? Because he would buy a 40 lb box of limes every 2 weeks or so. One day they asked, "Do you have a lemonade business?" He just laughed and said, "No! I just make lemonade to give to family and friends."
David made lemonade every week for his family, for church members on their birthdays, for his daughter's friends - whom he immediately adopted as his own - or even for a friend he met at the store who needed to know that somebody cared.
David also enjoyed taking his mother to buy groceries every week. He loved hearing her stories about the old days when she became a Christian. He marveled at her amazing memory for quoting verses from the bible. Most of all, David wanted to honor his mother. The thing that he relished about his time with his mom was dropping her off at her home because he knew his mom would ask him to kneel so she could pray over him and give him her blessing.
David is survived by his best friend and the love of his life Mabel with whom he enjoyed 36 years of marriage. His children David Albert, Erica Joy Gonzalez and her husband Joshua, Bethany Grace, two grandchildren June and Paul Gonzalez, his adopted son, Daiquonne Lanier, his mother Rev. Maria Segovia, his siblings Rev. Florentino (Tino) Segovia, Rosie Cruz (spouse Rudy), Rachel Olivarez (spouse Richard) and his younger brother John Segovia (spouse TC), his in-laws Reverend Isaias and Maria Elena Navarrete, brothers and sisters in law Tony and Annabel Lopez, Isaias (Ty) Navarrete, Bobby and Norma Navarrete, Albert and Elsa Espinosa, Mario and Elda Escobedo and numerous nieces and nephews, cats and chickens.
