In Loving Memory of Elena Cardenas

Elena was born on November 23, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas, to Pedro Gonzales and Carmen Nunez Chavez Rios.

She was one of seven siblings: Herminia Rodriguez, Jose Becerril (deceased), Luisa Alvarado (deceased), Refugia Garcia (deceased), Miguel Gonzalez (deceased), Olga Linares, and Gloria Lopez.

Elena was raised on the deep West Side of San Antonio and attended Carbajal Elementary School. Due to financial hardships during her childhood, she was unable to pursue a higher education and instead entered the workforce at a young age. She began working at Buddy’s Supermarket as a meat packer, where she remained for several years. She later became a school crossing guard for the City of San Antonio, faithfully serving her community for more than 20 years.

On November 23, 1966, Elena married Jesus S. Cardenas Jr. Together, they built a beautiful life and family. Elena was the mother of eight children: Jose G. Mendez (deceased), Diana Dela Rosa (deceased), Norma J. Jaramillo, Maryann Mendez (deceased), Ernest Mendez (deceased), Albert G. Cardenas (deceased), David G. Cardenas, and Nancy Cardenas-Ambriz.

Her family continued to grow throughout the years, blessing her with 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, as well as numerous friends who quickly became family.

Elena and Jesus shared nearly 60 years of marriage. She treasured being surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren, sisters, and loved ones. Elena had a personality like no other. She was bold, feisty, funny, and full of life. She loved telling jokes and making others laugh. She was also a woman of great wisdom who always had words of encouragement for anyone who felt defeated, discouraged, or lost.

Some of Elena’s happiest moments were the simple ones she shared with her husband, Jesus. They loved talking and laughing together, scratching lottery tickets, and taking trips to Kickapoo, Walmart, and Sam’s. Family, friends, and neighbors could often find the two of them sitting together in their backyard, scratching lottery tickets, waving to those passing by, and talking with neighborhood friends and family who honked as they drove past or stopped to visit for a while.

These simple moments became treasured memories and reflected what Elena valued most—family, laughter, companionship, and time spent with the people she loved.

Elena was also a devoted woman of faith. She attended Tiemplo La Tierra Prometida Church on the West Side of San Antonio, where she loved praising the Lord with all her heart. She was deeply loved by her church congregation, and her faith remained an important part of her life.

Elena leaves behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, wisdom, faith, and love. Her presence will be deeply missed by her beloved husband, Jesus; her children; her sisters; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and her many nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and friends.

Although Elena is no longer with us physically, the love she gave, the laughter she created, the wisdom she shared, and the memories she made will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her forever.
