Obituary

orn on August 3, 1957, in San Antonio, Texas, Cookie was the cherished daughter of Adela G. Newton and Ambrosio Camacho. She was preceded in death by her biological father, Ambrosio Camacho; her mother, Adela G. Newton; and the father who raised her, George R. Newton. She is also reunited in eternal peace with her siblings Berlinda Camacho (her son, Henry Camacho), Mary Jane Cruz, LeRoy Camacho, and Richard Camacho.

Cookie was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend—deeply loved by all who knew her. She is survived by her devoted husband of 42 years, Kent E. Starin; her children, Chasity Villarreal, Charles Villarreal (Sonia), and Crystal Dynes (Corey); her grandchildren, Jocelyn Valdez, Vin and Von Villarreal, and Christian and Carter Dynes; and her older brother, Ambrosio "Butch" Camacho Jr. (Connie). She also leaves behind many beloved cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends whom she held close to her heart.

Cookie embraced responsibility early in life, becoming a mother at just 14 years old. She left Horace Mann Middle School to care for her family, later earning her GED from St. Philip's College. Her drive and resilience led her to pursue a career in nursing, completing her Associate of Nursing degree at San Antonio College and ultimately earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix.

Throughout her remarkable career as a Registered Nurse, Cookie held numerous roles at hospitals across Texas. She began at Santa Rosa Hospital (ER, SICU, and Cath Lab), worked as a travel nurse, helped establish a hospital in Monterrey, Mexico alongside Dr. Guillermo Marcos, and managed the Cath Labs at both Methodist Hospital and Santa Rosa Northwest. Her final role before retirement was as Director of Nursing at Nix Hospital in downtown San Antonio. Cookie was not only a skilled nurse but also a mentor who inspired and uplifted countless colleagues in the medical field.

Beyond her professional achievements, Cookie found joy in simple pleasures—spending time at the beach, river, or poolside, tending to her garden, and creating a welcoming haven in the backyard of her childhood home. She was deeply involved in her grandchildren's lives, cheering them on in sports and extracurricular activities. Her unwavering faith and devotion to Christ were at the core of who she was.

Cookie's loving spirit and generous heart left a lasting impact on everyone she met. Her absence will be felt profoundly by her family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her.

A memorial remembrance ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in Chapel C from 2:00–5:00 PM, with a prayer service beginning at 3:00 PM. All services will conclude that evening, in accordance with Cookie's wishes to be cremated.

Following the services, family and friends are invited to gather for dinner at Lisa's Mexican Restaurant, 815 Bandera Rd., San Antonio, TX 78228.
