Esteban Gutierrez
Jr.
January 31, 1956 – June 25, 2025
Esteban "Shyla Devereaux" Gutierrez Jr. was born January 31, 1956 in San Antonio, TX and went to be with our Lord on June 25, 2025 at the age of 69. She attended Sidney Lanier HS and graduated from G.W. Brackenridge HS in 1974.
Shyla loved spending her time hosting and cooking for her family and friends. She loved to laugh and spend time with the ones she cared about. Shyla had an extensive, successful career as a hair stylist, and loved making others look good as much as she loved dressing up and looking good herself. She was also an amazing entertainer, some of her happiest times were when she was performing as Shyla Devereaux. Her career in Drag included winning titles such as Ms. Sweetheart and Ms. Queen of Soul.
An independent thinker and strong willed, she always lived life on her own terms. The song "This is my Life" by Shirley Basse encompasses Shyla's tenet of life. A person of compassion and trustworthiness, she had an innate ability to make everyone around her feel better. Shyla refused to dwell on what "might have been" and instead acknowledged the current situation and set sights on "what could be."
She was a wonderful person with a huge heart, who never shied away from a good joke. She enriched all who knew her through her basic decency and "giving" soul. She "loved" with her whole heart and it was felt by all who knew her. Shyla has set a moral azimuth for all of us to follow. She will wholeheartedly be missed by her friends and family, especially her "sisters" Sylvia, Myrna, Maria (Chachi), goddaughter Erika and beloved pet Sylver. A special "thank you" to Norma, her loyal home health provider, friend and confidant who always gave so much love and support.
Rest in peace my angel and rejoice with all of your loved ones awaiting your arrival, especially your "Mami." Shyla is preceded in death by parents Zenobia E. Jaramillo and Esteban Gutierrez and stepfather Juan M. Jaramillo. Survived by one brother, Trini and half-sister Dahlia along with loving family and trusted longtime friends.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, July 14, 2025 at St. Jude Catholic Church, 130 S. Augustine Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78237.
