Esther "Momo" Lopez, age 92 born December 10, 1930, in Rivera, Texas, passed away Monday, February 27, 2023. She was truly a remarkable person. Esther and her nine siblings grew up in the usual poverty-stricken town of Kingsville, Texas. In her younger years, she became a Nursing Assistant. It was during this time, that she met her husband.
She became a mother of four children and a "Homemaker". But, that was not enough for her. After raising her four children (one of who became an honored Police Officer for the San Jose Police Department, another a Technology Professional in California and Texas, a Production Factory Supervisor in Fowler, California and a Medical Doctor in San Antonio, Texas (graduate of Stanford Medical School), she then began to show her true talents.
Esther's talents were many, She was an expert of arts and crafts; making wreaths, dolls, and Christmas ornaments. She also became an extremely accomplished baker of wedding cakes. On her "spare time", she and her husband became very involved in Local and National politics during the difficult years of the 1980's and 90's. She was a member of LULAC, AFL-CIO and was a regular participant of "Huelga" (Strike) marches with Cesar Chavez. In fact, Esther was the private cook for Cesar Chavez when they visited San Jose, California.
Upon returning to Texas, she continued to participate in various political events (one of which resulted in a street being named after Cesar Chavez). She was involved in the Cesar Chavez marches in San Antonio, Texas which are held on a yearly basis. Esther was also a "movie star" of sorts, when she landed a cameo part in the iconic movie Selena!
A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and community leader who enjoyed Tejano music and dancing and family gatherings, who will be missed terribly by all who were a part of her life.
Preceded in death by her parents, Pedro and Inez Naranjo, and her eight brothers and sisters, her husband of 68 years, Serapio Lopez, and her daughter, Adriana Lopez Acosta.
She is survived by her three sons, Candelario Lopez (wife, Jessica), Larry Lopez (wife, Martha) and David Lopez (wife, Jenny), her brother, Oralio Naranjo, her sister, Cruz, 13 grandchilldren, 21 great grandchildren.
