Fermin
Canales
September 20, 1940 – August 15, 2024
Fermin Canales, 83, passed away at home on August 15, 2024. Fermin was surrounded by the warmth and love of his family. He was born in Realitos, Texas on September 20, 1940. Fermin honorably served in the United States Army. His service included 2 tours in Vietnam, 1 in South Korea, and 2 in Germany. He retired honorably after 26 years of service.
Fermin had a passion for music. His father, Celestino Canales, taught him to play the bajo sexto at 12. Just like his dedication to our country, Fermin was dedicated to his music. During his military career and after, Fermin continued playing in various conjuntos. He also had his own conjuntos, with his last being Los Veteranos de Fermin Canales, here in San Antonio, Texas. Fermin was inducted into the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame in the Class of 2011, in his hometown of Alice, Texas. After retirement, Fermin continued to serve his community, working for the Community Action of South Texas and the Alice Housing Authority.
Fermin is preceded in death by his parents, Celestino and Eva Canales; sisters, Gloria and Amelia; and his brothers, Roberto and Israel Canales. He leaves behind his brother, Adan Canales and sister, Sylvia Canales.
Fermin is loved and will be missed by his wife of 52 years, Angie M. Canales; his 5 children, Priscilla Garcia, Ernest Garcia, David Garcia, Samuel Canales, and Melissa Canales; his 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends, and countless music fans all over.
A special and sincere thank you to all band members, roadies, and loving loyal fans who supported our music career and became our cherished friends.
