Francisco
Castillo
June 21, 1947 – March 27, 2026
It saddens us to announce the passing of a man with a big heart, Francisco Castillo. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Francisco was also known as Frank, Cayo, Dad, Popo, Panchito, Franko, Grandpa, and Nicky Snick #2.
One of his greatest passions was music. At an early age he attended Stafford Elementary, Escobar Middle School, and Edgewood High School. He was very involved in the choir and it followed him throughout his whole life. Frank attended Edgewood in 1967 then enlisted in the Army where he earned Expert Marksman and Sharpshooter Badges. In the 1970's he had a conjunto band and played in various venues in San Antonio. At the age of 24, Frank met Paula, who he would love, marry, and spend the rest of his life with.
While raising a family and singing in his band he was part of a pool league and had regular practice sessions at home. It wasn't until the late 1980's Frank searched for a different way of life and he turned to God. He became very involved with our church community. He was a regular for the afternoon Saturday mass and began singing with the church choir. He was a member of the prayer group which had music and spread the word of God. His devotion to praising God went outside of Holy Family Church; he would travel to sing at Christ the King Prayer Group, St. Henry's Prayer Group, St Leo's Prayer Group, St. Mary Magdalene Prayer Group, and Charismatic Conventions. He also traveled outside of San Antonio to include trips to sing in Acuna, MX, Devine, TX, Laredo, TX, and Shallow Water, TX. He was part of the Cursillos of Christianity and one of the eldest Knights of Columbus members of the Holy Family Church.
In 2012, he had open heart surgery and was given a timeline of five to ten years. He surpassed that time and lived a bit more. It was not lost on anyone on the irony that it was his heart that would lead to his death because he had the biggest heart. He was the definition of what a great man was. He cared deeply for family, helped without being asked, made everything funnier, made time to let the kids climb on his back, the granddaughters comb his hair, and he always had a joke for you.
Francisco is preceded by his parents Jesus Castillo and Ernestina Castillo, siblings Daniel Castillo, Mary Mueller, Jesse Castillo, Juan Jose Castillo, and his Daddies Girl, Jessica Castillo. He is survived by his wife Paula Castillo, children Julian Castillo (Rachel Castillo) Christine Castillo-Hernandez, Patricia Castillo (Felipe Rojas), Elvia Pace (Marvin Pace), Raquel Castillo and Maria Garibay, thirteen (13) grandchildren, five (5) great grandchildren, and four (4) sisters, Terry Zuniga, Isabel DeVille, Mary Viesca, Julie Sandoval (David Sandoval).
Rosary Service is Wednesday, April 15, 2026, 6pm at Castillo Funeral Home, 520 N General McMullen Dr, San Antonio, Texas. The Funeral Mass is Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 10:30am at Holy Family Church, 152 Florencia Ave San Antonio, Texas and Internment Services following mass at Fort Sam National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd San Antonio, Texas at 1:15pm.
