Gilbert Tovar
Sr.
December 14, 1940 – February 10, 2026
Gilbert Tovar Sr. of San Antonio, TX passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, February 10th, 2026 at the age of 85. Born on December 14th, 1940, Gilbert was a beloved father, husband, and family man to the core. Mr. Tovar was retired from Northside ISD after devoting 26 years of work as a landscaper, painter, and mechanic. Those who knew Gilbert will remember him as an honest and straightforward man who always knew what he wanted. Behind his gruff exterior, Gilbert was known for his incredible kindness, his everlasting sense of humor, and his love for his family and friends.
Mr. Tovar married his beloved wife Rachel in 1962 and they lived happily for over 50 years until her passing in 2015. They cultivated a life and family full of love, laughter, and togetherness. The morals and knowledge that they passed on will be forever instilled in their children and community. Mr. Tovar in particular will especially be remembered for being an incredibly giving person, always willing to lend a hand, and helping his friends in need. His steadfast love and protectiveness will never be forgotten.
Gilbert loved the outdoors and was always ready to tackle his next project. He was an avid fisherman for over 65 years and loved to travel to the Texas coast to take on gar, drum, and even the occasional shark. A die hard Cowboys and Spurs fan, Mr. Tovar spent countless hours with his family rooting for his favorite team. He also loved to travel to Kickapoo Casino. A kid at heart, Gilbert enjoyed spending time with all of his grandchildren and brought great joy to their lives.
Mr. Tovar leaves his family with nothing but beautiful memories and he will live on through each and every one of them. He is survived by his five children, Mary, Gilbert (Cynthia), Rudy (Dianne), Irene (Robert), Juan (Lucy), and his cabbage patch kid Marina Mireles (Carlos), his 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, his special friend Janie, and 4 siblings. He is preceded in death by his wife Rachel, parents Andres and Juanita Tovar, and by several siblings as well. A celebration of life will be held at Castillo Funeral Home on February 20th 2026 at 6pm.
