Gloria Cruz Glass, 72, wife of Dwain Glass, passed away Monday morning, September 18, 2023, at her residence in New Braunfels, Texas. Gloria was born on May 21, 1951, in Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas, a daughter of the late Josephina Alonzo and Jesus Cruz.
Gloria's life was an example of joy and love bound by perseverance and faith. She was baptized at St. Jude Catholic Church on May 16, 1952, and confirmed on July 6, 1964. Accomplishing much in life; Gloria was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged on November 13, 1973. Moving to Baytown, Texas, she began working for ExxonMobil in the Baytown Olefins Plant. After 25 years of service, Gloria retired from ExxonMobile on May 1, 2006.
Gloria and Dwain Glass were married on July 14, 2001, and in 2008 moved to New Braunfels, Texas. Over the years, she pursued many hobbies and interests including Folklorico, Flaminco, and Kazamba dancing. She was a Master Naturalist and enjoyed working on the trails around her property with the help of Presley and then, Milo. She enrolled in college after she turned 65 to take some courses she was interested in and, it was free. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church Women's Group and made numerous friends. She bowled in leagues for many years, her favorite being the Woman's morning league in New Braunfels. Gloria hosted a Super Bowl party for 10 years. The festivities included pool and shuffleboard tournaments. She would always dress up and paint her face in support of her favorite team. Although she always said she didn't like running, she completed 22 marathons, 5 of which were completed in three months for the Texas Marathon Challenge, and numerous 1/2 marathons and fun runs. She rode the MS 150 ride from Houston to Austin 18 times and the MS 150 San Antonio 4 times.
In addition to her parents Josephina Alonzo and Jesus Cruz, she is also preceded in death by her granddaughter Presley Eastburn, brothers Richard Martinez, Robert Martinez and Richard Martinez Jr.
Family members include her husband of 22 years, Dwain Glass; children, Grace Maxwell, Arlene Ibarra (Eliazar), Carolyn Eastburn (Jeremy), Rudy Castillo (Amber), Drew Glass and Jared Glass (Cristina).
Gloria's pallbearers are Roger Cruz, Jose Antonio Sanchez, Leonard Martinez, Rocky Martinez, Eleazar Ibarra and Chad James.
Nine Grandchildren, Gaige Maxwell, Savannah Maxwell, Angelisa Ibarra, Mark Ibarra, Patricia Ibarra, Gage Eastburn, Gavin Eastburn, Milo Castillo, and Zander Castillo; siblings, Raquel Skyes (Gerald), Elida Galindo, Jose Cruz, Lucinda Cruz, Andrea Torres, Roger Cruz (Laura), and Leo Martinez; in addition to a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive guests at Castillo Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm for visitation and a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 pm.
A funeral mass will be conducted on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at 10:30 am in the St. Jude Catholic Church. Burial will follow with a graveside service in the San Fernando Cemetery II.
