Horace John Hernandez, Jr.

May 13, 1951 – August 15, 2026

Horace John Hernandez, Jr., a devoted Catholic, family man, and member of the Holy Cross community, died peacefully on August 15, 2026, at his West Side home. He was 75.

Born on May 13, 1951, to Horacio and Victoria Hernandez in San Antonio, TX, Horace attended Christ the King Catholic School before graduating from Holy Cross High School in 1969.

Over the years, Horace picked up many nicknames from family and friends. His sister, Maria Elena Hernandez, couldn’t pronounce the name Junior, so she called him “Junjo” instead. That name stuck around the family - much like the name “Moose” did for his fellow Knights.

He sustained decades-long friendships with Knights through the Holy Cross Memorial Day weekend alumni softball tournament and by taking trips to fish off the Texas coast.

Horace worked many jobs, including at his alma mater, but he will be most remembered as a passionate man, who cared deeply for his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Horacio and Victoria; sister, Maria Elena; and niece Stephanie Hernandez. He is survived by his niece, Tiffany Hernandez; Tiffany’s children, Selena and Zane; numerous cousins, alumni, and friends. His presence in our lives will be dearly missed, by everyone who knew and loved him.

Family, alumni, and friends of Horace are invited to meet for a visitation at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 3rd, at Holy Cross High School. In the Holy Cross High School chapel, the rosary will begin at 9:30a.m., followed by mass at 10:30am. Afterwards, there will be a potluck memorial reception in the Holy Cross cafeteria. Interment will be held at a later date.
