Janie Mesa
Velez
January 3, 1924 – November 15, 2021
Janie Mesa Vetez passed away peacefully on November 3, 2021, surrounded by the warmth and love of her three sons Julian Menchaca Sr., Johnny De La Zerda, Philip Velez and family members by her bedside. She was 97 years old. She was born in Mason, Texas on January 3, 1924.
She was affectionately known as Super Granny by all her grandchildren as well as the majority of family members. Her character was one that was always helping others, giving of herself whenever needed. She never let life circumstances stop her to do what was right for her family. She touched every member of the family with her affection and love through her words and actions. She willingly (and with all the compassion a mother can give) raised her youngest son Reuben Velez who had Cerebral Palsy for 49 years before he passed. She worked most of her life as a seamstress, providing and raising her four sons, including many of the grandchildren. Late in life she finally took time for herself by staying active in bowling, becoming an avid jogger, participating in San Antonio Marathons winning first place three years in a row for her age group, gardening, being an avid physical exerciser. Nothing was off limits for her. She always reached out to strangers especially other elderly people even if just to say hello. Her final contribution was during her late eighties she volunteered to help abused children at the San Antonio Children's Shelter affectionally being called "Grandma" by the kids and many of the staffers there. Janie never stopped giving of herself. Her life through her actions left a legacy that will remain in our hearts forever!
Janie is also preceded in death by her youngest son, Reuben Velez. Janie is loved and will be missed by her sons, Julian Menchaca Sr. (Beatrice), Johnny M. De La Zerda (Lety), Philip Velez; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 35 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
