Obituary

Janie Lopez Wehmeyer, with her loving family members at her side, died at 12:42 AM on September 20, 2024 at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, TX.

Janie was born on March 1, 1944, in the Lopez family home at 2234 South Navidad in San Antonio, Texas, in one of the most disadvantage areas of the city, but she was smart and she had grit. By her own efforts, she managed to be admitted to the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1971 with a degree in Liberal Arts, the first in her family to graduate from college. She was a Texas Ex Life Member. She watched Longhorn football games with a passion until the very end.

Janie worked for the Texas Employment Commission where she became an expert at processing unemployment claims, working there for 30 years, until her retirement on August 31, 2002.

On August 13, 1994, at St. John Lutheran Church in San Antonio, Texas, Janie was married to Jim Wehmeyer. They made a honeymoon trip to Yellowstone National Park. Over the years ahead, they would continue their travels to many of the other National Parks around the country.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Miguel Lopez and Luisa Macias Lopez; three brothers, infant Miguel Lopez, Mike Lopez and Ricardo Lopez; and by a sister, Dolores Lopez Jimenez.

Janie is survived by her husband, Jim Wehmeyer; her brother, Roberto Lopez; her sister, Alice Almendarez; and an extended family of nieces and nephews, and by many friends. One of the nieces is Rose Cadena. When Rose was a teen, Janie took her into her house and became like a mother for her. Rose's oldest son, Michael Gray, was also especially close to Janie, becoming like a grandson to her. Both were at her bedside at her final hour.

A visitation for Janie will be held on Monday, October 7, 2024, at Castillo Funeral Home, 520 N. General McMullen, San Antonio, Texas, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
