Joe V.
"Pepe" Gomez
September 8, 1934 – September 26, 2022
On Monday, September 26th 2022, Joe V. "Pepe" Gomez was called home at the age of 88. He was a great son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-great grandfather and friend. Pepe was born in San Antonio, Texas, to parents Jose B. and Juanita V. Gomez. He attended SouthSide High School up until the middle of his senior year and then enlisted into the US Navy with the blessing of his father at the age of 17. He served 4 years (1952-1956) active duty and proudly served during the Korean war on the USS Warrick. He served an additional 4 years (1956-1960) with the reserves to fulfill his military obligation. During his service, Dad received the National Defense medal, the Korean ribbon medal, and the United Nations medal. He was proud to serve his country.
On August 23, 1958 he married Santa Vargas and was blessed with a family of 5 sons and two daughters. They were married for 64 years.
Dad was also very athletic, with baseball being his top game. He was also proud to have played with the Mexican American minor league. Dad enjoyed fishing with his buddies but his family was never left far behind. His top priorities were to care for his family which brought him great joy and peace. Dad was a cheerful giver to all, no matter the situation he was in. The biblical scripture "It's better to give than to receive" was something he took to heart. Being a professional sports avid watcher, especially the NFL, he was a die hard Dallas Cowboy fan with the San Antonio Spurs being his favorite basketball team.
Dad was always looking out for everyone, but most of all he wanted to know that our mom was going to be ok and well taken care of. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Ricardo V. Gomez, Frank Gomez and Janie V. Gomez. He is survived by his wife Santa, his sons; Frank Sanchez(Mary Alice), Joe Gomez, Enrique Gomez(Rose Marie), Richard Gomez(Toni), Mark A. Gomez(Ruby) and daughters; Sylvia Martinez and Veronica Gomez. He also had 23 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. We will deeply miss the Patriarch of our family and all the joy and laughter he shared with us.
Thank you Dad, we all love you.
