Obituary

John Jeffrey Megan entered eternal rest on September 2, 2021, at the age of 76 surrounded by the tremendous warmth and deep love of his family. John was born in Newark, New Jersey on July 22, 1945 as the #3 son of William and Dorothy (Burke) Megan. He grew up in Denville, New Jersey, Glendale, California, and Oceanside, California.

John spent 27 years in the United States Army, 20 of which were overseas. He was a Combat Veteran having served in Vietnam. He also served as Troop Command, First Sergeant, and Sergeant Major in Landstuhl, Germany. His last assignment was at the Academy of Health Sciences at Fort Sam Houston as a Senior Instructor.

During his military career, John received the Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device (First Oak Leaf Cluster), the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, and he retired as U.S. Army Sergeant Major. He also completed his Bachelor's of Science from the University of Maryland in 1982 and his Master's Degree in Educational Counseling from the University of Boston in 1989.

In November of 1975, John married the love of his life, Karin Margot Leupert, whom he met while stationed in Erlangen, Germany. He was a devoted father who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling, as well as collecting stamps. John was also a devout Christian who served at King of Kings Lutheran Church in various leadership roles, and he was passionate about helping others.

John was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy (Burke) Megan; and his brothers, William and Robert Megan. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 45 years, Karin; his children, Sandra; Mark, and his wife, Michele; his four grandchildren, Matthew, Lukas, Eliana, and Liam; his sister, Trish Megan; his nieces and nephew, JoAnne Kondori, her husband, Shapour, and their children, Jasmin and Leyla; Christine Battles-Merhige, and her husband, Richard, and son Christopher; Melody Megan; and Bryan Jacobson; as well as other extended family and friends.

John's interment will be at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery, San Antonio, TX, on Thursday, September, 23 at 9:30 A.M., followed by a memorial service in his honor at King of Kings Lutheran Church at 2 P.M.
