Jose David Martinez, age 67, of San Antonio died peacefully at Abode Home on Saturday, March 19, 2022. HE was born April 21, 1954, in San Antonio, Texas to Eustolio and Guadalupe (Cavazos) Martinez. He was preceded in death by his parents. Jose is survived by his sister Rosa Maria Martinez and numerous cousins and friends.
Jose was a lifelong resident of San Antonio, proudly graduating from Sidney Lanier High School in 1971. He studied on and received a BA degree in Spanish & Business Administration from Our Lady of the Lake University, an MA in Business Administration from the University of the Incarnate Word, an MA degree in International Relations and Economic Development from St. Mary's University and an MLS degree in Library Science with Management Certification from the University of North Texas.
Jose had extensive professional and key civic accomplishments including President of the Rotary Club of Port Arthur, Texas; President of the Kwanis Club of Port Arthur, Texas; Advisory board member of the Communities in Schools Southeast Texas; Advisory board member of the Bob Hope School of Port Arthur, Texas; Advisory board member of the Salvation Army of Port Arthur, Texas; Advisory board member of the Texas Library Association; Member of the American Library Association; Recipient of the 2013 M.L.K support group award for community service; Employed by the City of San Antonio Public Library; Member of Knights of Columbus in Port Arthur, Texas; Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister (Hospital ministry); CTSA22-camera volunteer; Member of the Guadalupano Society of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Some of Jose's key accomplishments included but were not limited to:
-Introducing new library cards with QR code access
-Implemented and established a digital wallpaper to promote literacy throughout the city of Port Arthur.
-Added check-out laptops to be used in the library
-Implemented a children's bookflix and trueflix database.
-Established the first digital art display gallery
-Implemented a video conferencing project in liaison with the Houston Public Library System, one of the largest in the nation!
-Implemented/Administered programs to evaluate staffing levels with overall cost efficiency.
-Planned and presented annual budgets for City Council approval.
Jose's professional and key civic accomplishments reflect the use of his God-given talents-a visionary leadership and maintaining the highest standards of service to others-combined with a very special and deep devotion to our blessed Mother Mary and to St. Joseph his patron saint. We honor Jose with our presence and a reception to celebrate his life.
Visitation will take place at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1321 El Paso St., 78207 on Thursday, March 31, 2022, at 9am with a Rosary at 9:30am and a funeral mass at 10am. Entombment to follow at San Fernando Cemetery II Mausoleum.
