September 27, 1946 – January 19, 2023
- Jose Adolfo Medellin, born September 27, 1946, was called to his resting place on January 19, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.
He was a son, brother, father, friend, educator, and lastly a devoted American soldier. He was very proud to have served his country, being drafted at the young age of 21. He is our G.I. JOE, our hero! He served 24 years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war and with the US Army 49 th Armored Division with the Texas National Guard; now having retired from the armed forces; he was not prepared for his most challenging battle yet to come; his health. Having survived cancer not once but twice, represents to his admirable strength, character and grace.
He is preceded in death by parents Cruz C. Garcia, Pedro C. Garcia, siblings David Medellin, Maria G. Toney and Maximiano Garcia. He is survived by his children Joseph A. Medellin and Donald Ontiveros. Grandchildren Brandon Ontiveros and Victoria Araceli Ontiveros.
Great Grandchildren Nya and Ariella, along with many nieces and nephews.
He attended Fox Tech high school. Later on in his adult life he would be part of the Buffalo Herd, always supporting fellow herd members and the community.
He was drafted and spent his two years in Germany as a Chemical Storage Specialist. Afterwards, he became a member of the U.S. Army 49 th Armored Division as a Tactical Intelligence Analyst. He retired as a Master Sergeant and had received the Army Commendation Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (4th Award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and various other ribbons during his long career.
In his young adult life, Jose played football for the Toros. Later, he would go on to coach the Thunderbirds, a semi-pro football team.
He attended Southwest Texas University and attained a Degree in Education. He went on to teach at Sam Houston High School. Late in his retirement, he returned to the education field to teach a vocational program teaching students different trades.
The next part of the journey took him to State Farm Insurance. His claims career was filled with adventures, relationships and memories that touched so many lives. He loved sharing colorful stories of those days.
He was a lifelong member of St. Alphonso's church. This was his family's church, and he ensured that they were always remembered.
His love and guidance will be missed by many.
