Obituary

Jose Victor Vecera passed away peacefully from this world on August 14, 2025, just two months shy of his 80th birthday. He was surrounded by the unwavering love of his devoted wife of 56 years, Antonia Vecera, and the comforting presence of his family at his bedside during his final days.

Born on October 8, 1945, Victor now joins his grandparents, Rito and Enriqueta Vecera; his father, Rafael Paz Jr.; his mother, Elena Garcia; and his brothers, Gilberto and Samuel Garcia, in eternal rest.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion cherished by his wife, Antonia, and their children: Lazaro (Olga) Vecera, Jose Victor Vecera Jr., and Rebecca (Jason Ambrose) Vecera. He is also survived by his siblings: Enrique Garcia, Rose (Ray) Medrano, and Mary (Guadalupe) Dominguez; seven grandchildren, Daniel, Joey, Brandon, Anthony (Olivia), Carlos, Sergio, and Vincent Vecera; five great-grandchildren; and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.

After graduating from Martin High School in Laredo, Texas—where he briefly paused his studies during his junior year to pursue his dream of playing baseball with the Mexico City Red Devils minor league team—Victor embarked on a life defined by service and perseverance.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and was deployed to Vietnam and served in the infantry where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. A fiercely patriotic veteran, Victor believed deeply in doing his duty while never hesitating to question authority when necessary—a testament to his integrity and civic commitment.

After completing his military service, Victor worked full-time to support his growing family, all while attending college in the evenings. His dedication paid off as he built a successful career in financial management for the U.S. government and developed his own personal business ventures.

His final years were richly blessed by the arrival of his great-grandchildren: Sophia, Kai, Ava, Leo, and Aurelia. Visitors knew they could find Don Victor at his desk diligently working on taxes, or cozied up beside Toña in their double recliners, watching classic tough-guy films, novelas, or the evening news—always with their loyal Chihuahua, Chiquita, and their cat, Missy, close by.

Having found fulfillment and success in their own lives, Victor and Antonia lived by the principle of generosity. Whether through a helping hand or thoughtful words of wisdom, Victor was always ready to support those striving to uplift their families—a quiet yet steadfast champion of perseverance, kindness, and compassion.

Victor's absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him—his family, friends, and the many customers whose lives he touched. Yet, in our sorrow, we find comfort in remembering a life lived with extraordinary purpose. Victor's journey was marked by profound accomplishments, enduring love, and the deep respect of those around him. His memory will continue to inspire and uplift all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The Vecera family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the dedicated medical teams at Audie Murphy VA Hospital. Throughout Victor's time in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Medicine Inpatient Units, and Community Living Center, every healthcare and patient services professional demonstrated extraordinary compassion, respect, and care—not only for Victor, but for the entire family. Their kindness will never be forgotten.

Friends and family are invited to bid farewell to Victor on Sunday, August 24th, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Castillo Funeral Home, located at 520 N. General McMullen Dr, San Antonio, TX 78228. Military Honors will be presented at 5:00 PM, followed by the Rosary at 6:00 PM.
