Joseph John
Sitterly
September 14, 1961 – January 11, 2022
Joseph John Sitterly passed away on January 11, 2022, in San Antonio, TX. He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on September 14, 1961, to Joseph R. and Lois (Hart) Sitterly. As an Air Force brat, he lived in multiple places including Nebraska, The Philippines, Germany, Taiwan, and Amsterdam, NY. He moved to San Antonio at the age of 14 and lived there for the remainder of his life.
Joe is a 1979 graduate of Oliver Wendell Holmes High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1984 from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He was a proud UTSA Roadrunner and enjoyed following their sports teams. His closets were full of Roadrunner t-shirts and other apparel that he wore almost every day.
At home, Joe had a MacGyver-like knack for fixing things with whatever he had on hand. His repairs were frequently not pretty but they were always functional. He was particularly proud of fixes that involved bailing wire, bent coat hangers, or rope with a fancy knot. Joe was an Eagle Scout, and it was evident in his knot tying skills and the sharpness of his pocket knives. He embraced the Boy Scout motto, "Be Prepared". The trunk of his car and his pockets were full of tools and other items that just might be needed to get himself or others out of a jam.
Joe was a collector of many things. If he found an item that he liked, he would buy multiples of the item. His large number of back-scratchers is among his more humorous collections. His vast collection of Garfield books gives a glimpse into his sense of humor. If you ever suffered through his numerous puns, you experienced another dimension of his humor.
Joe was employed by The Hills Church (formerly Rainbow Hills Baptist Church) for 32 years. While working at the church, he acquired his most treasured friends from amongst his coworkers and church members.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister, Tracy Lynn Sitterly. He is survived by his brother, Brian Sitterly (Darcy). He is also survived by his five nephews -- Austin Sitterly, Blake Sitterly, Jose Arredondo, Travis Bustos, and Connor Bustos.
A memorial service will be held for Joe at The Hills Church on February 26, 2022, at 11:00 am. The church is located at 2255 Horal St, San Antonio, TX 78227. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Hills Church "Benevolence Ministry".
