Juan "Johnny"
Manuel Rodriguez
March 16, 1956 – January 14, 2026
Coach Juan "Johnny" Manuel Rodriguez, a dedicated educator, mentor, and community volunteer, passed away on January 14, 2026, at the age of 69. Born on March 16, 1956, in Eagle Pass, Texas, Johnny spent his life championing the potential of others.
A Life of Service and Education: A proud graduate of Sul Ross State University, Johnny devoted over 37 years to the classroom. He began his career in Eagle Pass I.S.D. and later served Edgewood I.S.D., focusing his heart and talents on teaching special needs students. Beyond the classroom, he was a passionate coach and mentor, preparing his students for the Special Olympics and instilling in them a sense of pride and accomplishment. A firm believer in the transformative power of education, he was a constant source of encouragement for his nieces, nephews, and stepchildren, always urging them to pursue their college dreams.
A Heart for Community and Sports: Johnny's impact extended deep into the San Antonio community. Alongside his beloved sweetheart, Gloria, he was a tireless volunteer. Together, they lent their time to the All-American Bowl, Miracle League, local celebrity basketball games, the NCAA Final Four, and COSA District 5 events.
An avid sports enthusiast, Johnny's loyalty belonged to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the San Antonio Spurs. He and Gloria shared a love for travel, often embarking on road trips to Chicago, catching games with the Milwaukee Brewers or St. Louis Cardinals along the way. Whether it was visiting the Astros, Rangers, and Texans, or spending time at Wrigley Field or catching the White Sox in Chicago, Johnny was happiest when he was at the game.
Family and Legacy: Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Juan Pablo and Hortencia Rodriguez. His legacy of kindness and service will be carried forward by his devoted wife, Gloria Garcia; his sister, Sandra Perez (Raul); and his brother, Carlos "Charlie" Raul Rodriguez (Patricia).
He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews—Jackie, Cynthia, Ana Lorena, Raul, Carlos, Anitza, and Juan Pablo (J.P.)—as well as his grand-nieces and nephews. His memory will also be honored by Christopher C. Garcia (Brenda Li), Yvette, and her children Aiyana and Carlos Leigh. He will be deeply missed by his primo George, family, friends and his teammates in the YMCA senior league basketball team.
