Juana R.
Cuenca
December 5, 1941 – October 3, 2020
Juana R. Cuenca, age 78, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2020, with her loving children by her side, into the warm embrace of her sons who preceded her in death. She enjoyed good people, good food, was a loyal San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys fan, and loved hummingbirds.
She was born December 5, 1941, in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, to Victoriano Rabago and Juanita Medina.
She lost her mother at the age of nine and was raised by her sisters Lucia and Eloisa. She is reunited in heaven with her parents, sons Ruben and Juan Ricardo, grandson Jacob, siblings Artemio, Homero, Agustin, David, Pedro, Lucia, Eloisa, and various nieces and nephews, including her beloved niece/sister Maria Elena "Nena" (Jesse) Martinez. She is also reunited with in-laws Carmen & Adolfo Lopez Cuenca, Florina & Jose Guevara, Hector H. (Teresa) Cuenca, Nancy (Henry H.) Cuenca, and Emilio (Margarita) Valdez.
In her early years, she worked as a waitress at various San Antonio eateries, a housekeeper for various families, a sales associate at El Jalisco Bakery, and attended night school at Lanier High School. Later, she became a school crossing guard at Las Palmas Elementary in the Edgewood ISD, a volunteer English teacher for Project Learn to Read, a volunteer citizenship instructor at Bazan Library, and a home healthcare provider.
Everywhere she went, someone knew her. This made it very difficult for her children to misbehave. She had a great sense of humor, made friends easily, and was an avid user of the VIA bus system. If there wasn't a bus route to her destination, she walked.
Friends and family could depend on her for the best advice, even if they didn't think so at the time. She knew what herbal tea or prayers you needed depending on the ailment you had, be it physical or spiritual.
She encouraged continuing education and self-sufficiency, regardless of age or gender.
Unless she was in prayer or meditating, her home was filled with music of various genres in English and Spanish.
She will be greatly missed by her husband Ricardo H. Cuenca, children Roberto (Kimberley) Cuenca, Patricia (Michael) Zapata, Cynthia Cuenca, grandchildren Marsha (Frank Jr.) Martinez, Desiré Cuenca, Derek Cuenca, Juan Antonio Velazquez, Jaylen Velazquez, several great-grandchildren, siblings Victoriano (Ramona) Rabago, Margarita Rabago, and Maria de la Luz (Jose) Mendez, and other extended family members.
Our family would like to give a special heartfelt thanks to our cousin Teresa Martinez, our mother's great niece and god daughter. You were her voice when she needed to be heard, and her companion when we could not be. You were her guardian angel, and we will always be grateful for that.
Our thanks to the Golden Estates staff that showed our mother kindness while she was under their care, and the evening and other staff whose names we do not recall or we never got to meet, but were kind to her as well.
