She believed in giving back to her community and she volunteered at various events and was a member of community charity organizations. Julia was a vital founder of the Pan American Club in Torrejon AFB in Madrid, Spain.
Employment/Education:
Julia attended elementary at JT Brackenridge, middle school at Harris M.S., and she was a proud graduate of the Class of 1954 from Fox Tech High School – the home of the Buffalos. Julia always enjoyed cosmetology and fashion. One of Julia's early jobs was working at The Fashion clothing store with her mother. She really enjoyed retail management and dressing up every day in her nice dresses. During her time as a military wife she became a full time stay at home mom and she participated in every school show and volunteered at every event the kids had. At one monumental point in her life she and her ex-husband revamped a church across from John Jay High School and opened La Tejanita, one of the first Mexican food restaurants in that area. Every day it was packed during the lunch hour and there would be lines outside the door on Sunday mornings with people ready to purchase barbacoa. The restaurant was well known, and she was one of the main cooks and trained others to make her recipes.
Later, she tried staying home, but wanted to work outside the home to be around people and she went to work at Fox Photo and worked in the classic hut helping customers with their photos and developing. She also worked at Penners downtown in the finance department and implemented many of the record systems they used for years. As she was moving up the career field, she worked for financial institutions though out San Antonio, such as, NBC Bank, Bank of America and finally retiring from Citi Bank after several years of service as a Credit Investigator. Throughout her years she always continued to learn, and she had so many accolades and certificates of completion for various courses she took to learn more about the financial field. Julia retired in 2005 to care for her last grandchild since had not had that opportunity to do so since she was full time worker when the others were born. She had mentioned many times that her life was very fulfilled and her most important job was taking care of her children and grandkids and watching them grow up to be successful.
Hobbies/Interests:
Julia was a master crafter and she loved to create items and teach others to do crafts. She loved doing crafts with her grandchildren. They would make fiesta flowers, bedazzle clothing, and would create any other various craft ideas she had.
One of her daughters had given her the nickname, the "Book of Knowledge" because family members would flock to her for her recipes, creative ideas, business advice and for her sewing expertise with help with various projects. She was known for making costumes, blankets, scarfs, purses and later she had even ran a business in her kitchen selling hot sauce and replacing watch batteries. Julia was a dynamic business lady and always conducted herself as a proper lady and always had ideas. At one point she became remarkably busy with selling purses that she remade from HEB bags of the Spurs and Selina. She was always creating something and reselling. Julia also loved to attend bingo and always had a good time. She had a passion for dancing and had the best cumbia moves. She could dance and dance her heart content and loved music.
Later in life her main joy was going on bus trips to Coushatta and Kickapoo with her sister, Janie, and friends. She did one bus trip with the grandchildren and that is another story for another time; needless to say, the grandchildren could not all ride the bus together after that. She also loved getting together with her friends and family to make tamales and she enjoyed watching her novellas. We all knew not to call at 7PM during her favorite one.
Julia loved sports and her favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys and she always had hopes of them going to the Super Bowl. She believed it every year and watched every game. She might had not known every player, but she knew when they messed up because you could hear it from her when she was upset for a couple of days. She also loved watching the SPURS games and she would watch the games with her friends in the recreation room or at home in full SPURS gear from earrings to a scarf she made and one a of the kind jersey she created.
Julia will be missed tremendously, her smile and joy for everything is something we will never forget. Stories about her will carry on for years to come. She will continue to be loved so many and her sweet demeanor will never be forgotten. Her love for God is what got her through anything. We know he was waiting for her with open arms. Her children would like to thank her personal physician, Dr. Stella Yu, the VITAS Hospice Unit and her friend and provider Tina Rosas.
