Lonnie Cantu, born October 24, 1964, passed away on January 16, 2026 at 61 years old. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Cantu, Sr., his baby sister, Cynthia Ann Cantu, and his nephew Mike Portales. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Veronica Cantu, his mother Emma J. Cantu, his siblings Robert Cantu, Jr. (JoAnn), Yvette Sanchez (Ray), nieces and nephews: Aaron, Caleb, Bethany, Blu, Alexandria (Will), Alicyn (Stephen), Miranda, Joe, Julian (Tina), grandnephews Liam and Rowan, and grandnieces Emery and Jeannette.
Lonnie was a graduate of Oliver Wendell Holmes High School, and his most treasured memories were of his time as a defensive end and linebacker for the Varsity Holmes Huskies Football Team, winning the 1980 City and Bi-District Championship and placing on the 1982 28-5A All-District Team. Following high school, Lonnie served in various roles at the family business, Cantu Printing. With his extensive knowledge of printing processes, he went on to serve as a print buyer, overseeing project specs, proofing, and production for various companies. Lonnie then earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Business Administration from Northwest Vista College and later studied at Our Lady of the Lake University. He also earned a certificate from the Community Kitchen Culinary Training Program at the San Antonio Food Bank. He enjoyed serving on the Holmes Class of 1983 Reunion Committee, where he organized events for hundreds of alumni. His love for friends and family also led him to organize multiple large-scale Halloween parties, where he and friends hosted local bands, DJs, and costume contests. Lonnie was also a life-long fan of the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys. He treasured the beautiful memories he created with friends and family and will be missed tremendously.
A visitation will be held at Castillo Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 4 from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 6 p.m.
On Thursday, February 5, a mass will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 9883 Marbach Road, followed by procession to interment at Resurrection Cemetery at Cordi-Marian.
