Obituary

Margarita Magaña Velasquez, widow of Fidel B. Velasquez, went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, August 26, 2023, in San Antonio Texas. She was born in Chamberino, New Mexico, a daughter of the late Euphemia Zaragoza and Francisco Magaña.

Margarita was known by many names, 'Prieta, Mage, Mom, the mommy, mumsy, amor, or momma but one thing held true regardless of her title; she loved life. She carried her cross and trusted in the Lord with all her soul, mind, heart, and strength. Margarita lived on this earth for over nine decades where in that time she was afforded a life to which she dedicated to her faith and family. Her life was an example of goodness, and she leaves behind a legacy that includes many generations of genuinely good people.

A good and true servant of the Lord, Margarita was active with many organizations at multiple churches in her community. They included leadership and membership with the Guadalupanas, Coro de Grupo Oracion, the 6 pm Spanish Choir Coordinator and C.O.P.S. She served as church money counter and an Extraordinary Minister giving the Eucharist to other members of the faithful at mass, or to the sick, who were confined to their homes.

Prior to her retirement she was a valued employee of companies to include Fine Silver Manufacturing Co and Ke-lac Uniforms and JB Manufacturing Co where she made lasting relationships with coworkers, she considered lifelong friends. She always recounted memories of one of her first jobs where she worked as a soda fountain clerk making floats, milkshakes and served ice cream to the customers. Aunt Kika would go with blind Mr. Wicho to walk her home after work. She was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and enjoyed games; sports made remember the memories of playing games of softball when young. Margarita enjoyed the simple pleasures of life including time with family and friends listening to music, playing music on her guitar, and dancing, doing puzzles and reading scripture. Loved Thanksgiving meals with family and watching the cowboys play. She especially loved Christmas, Easter hunts, picnics at home or at Canyon Lake, Woodlawn and Elmendorf Lake with Lupe and Glenn BBQ'ing. Her unwavering support for anything dear to her was present in so many ways and she showed examples in how she never attended an Edgewood High School football game but was one of the Red Raiders biggest supporters. She was simply ready to always places the needs of others before her own. Her passing seems incomprehensible but through her strength and faith we know that one day we will be reunited once again.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to David Velasquez Jr, Elma, Evette, Xavier and LaZet for visiting Margarita in June and taking her, Hope, and Ruben to eat out at Lou's Pizza and Bill Miller BBQ, she loved it and cherished the time together. She was also thankful and grateful for her son Art who delivered breakfast almost every Sunday for so many years and for the picnic with Marsha and Theresa Rene, Lisa Marie and Jennifer Lynn. Thank you for all the prayers and to her son in law Ruben, for being so supportive! A big thank you to Vitas Hospice for all their care.

In addition to her husband, Fidel Balandran Velasquez and parents, Euphemia Zaragoza and Francisco Magaña, she is also preceded in death by her sons, David M. Velasquez Sr and Guadalupe M. Velasquez; sisters, Fausta Munoz, Juana 'Janie' Ontiveros, Maria Vasquez and Maria Jesusita Dominguez; and brothers, Alejandro Magaña, Manuel Magaña and Paul Magaña Sr.
