Obituary

Maria Candelaria Barrera, better known as Candy, was born on February 2, 1950. She went to be with the Lord on August 9, 2022. She grew up surrounded by a close-knit family in the heart of the westside of San Antonio, Texas and was a proud graduate of Lanier High School Class of 1969. At the age of 22, she married Guadalupe Barrera, and began her journey as a loyal and supportive army wife living in: Nuremberg, Germany, Fort Worth, Tx, Fort Coby, Panama, Landstuhl, Germany and Fort Hood, Tx. Along the way she made many lifelong friendships and went on to have four beautiful children. Candy was a dedicated full-time mom who demonstrated resilience, strong will, determination, and endless love allowing her to proudly raise her children. Later in life, she joined SAISD as a Cook at Bowden Elementary for 10 years. Candy's kind heart and generosity was larger than life, she was always willing to donate to school events or help families in need. As a servant leader she volunteered with organizations such as:  Rhodes Alumni Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion, 40/8, and numerous school booters and PTA. One of Candy's joys in life was cooking. She expressed her love by cooking your favorite meals whenever requested. You could never leave hungry whenever you were around her. She also loved plants. Home Depot and HEB were some of her favorite nursery spots.  Music was her therapy. At any quinceanera or wedding you can find her dancing to Tejano jams by Ruben Ramos and for sure the oldies remix at the end of the night. Her main passion was her grandchildren. She enjoyed making them happy by any means. From driving across town participating in school events to creating TikTok videos, she did it all for them. Her family was blessed to have had her help raise and care for all her grandchildren. She created unique bonds with each of them that will be cherished for a lifetime. She was truly a strong woman who had a captivating personality and humble heart. She will be missed by all. Candy is preceded in death by her brothers Raul and Ernest Serna; her sister, Joanne Serna Garcia; her parents Cecilio and Mary Serna. She is survived by Guadalupe Barrera Sr and their four children: Jose Barrera (Laura), Guadalupe Barrera Jr (Andrea), Cecilio Barrera (Rosie), and Jennifer Barrera Rodriguez (Christine); grandchildren: Audrey, Steve, Brianna, Mariah, Shyanne, Gabriela, CJ, and Zindayah; siblings: Aida Mendez (Artemio) and Larry Serna (Rebecca); and numerous nieces and nephews.
