In Loving Memory of Our Beloved Mom

Maria Olivia Martinez (Hernandez)

With hearts that are broken but filled with gratitude for the years we were blessed to have her, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Maria Olivia Martinez (Hernandez). Mom peacefully entered the arms of our Lord on July 16, 2026, at her home in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on August 1, 1952, in San Benito, Texas.

Our mom’s life was never measured by the things she owned but by the lives she touched. From working as a migrant worker to dedicating 32 years of service to the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District, she showed us that hard work, determination, and faith could overcome any obstacle. She taught us that there is dignity in honest work and that no sacrifice is too great when it is made for the people you love.

If you knew our mom, you knew her heart. She simply could not turn away someone who needed help. It never mattered if you were family, a lifelong friend, or someone she had just met—if you needed a meal, a ride, a listening ear, or a helping hand, she was there. Her kitchen was always open, and somehow there was always enough food for one more person. She believed no one should leave her home hungry, and many people experienced that love around her table.

Mom loved to travel, even if it was just taking a drive through the Texas Hill Country. She found beauty in the little things—a quiet country road, a family gathering, sharing a meal, or simply spending time with the people she loved most. Those moments became lifelong memories for all of us.

To us, she wasn’t just our mother—she was our greatest teacher, our protector, our biggest supporter, and the heart of our family. She taught us to be kind, to work hard, to never give up, and to always help others. The lessons she gave us will continue to guide us for the rest of our lives.

Anyone who grew up around Mom will probably smile when they remember hearing her famous words: ”¡Te voy a pegar!” More often than not, those words were followed by a quick swat and then laughter. It became one of the many expressions that made her uniquely our mom. Looking back now, we realize those moments were never about discipline—they were wrapped in love, humor, and the special bond she shared with all of us. We would give anything to hear those words just one more time.

She was welcomed into Heaven by the love of her life, Abelardo Martinez Sr.; her parents, Castulo Hernandez and Marina C. Hernandez; and her brothers, Castulo Hernandez Jr., Guadalupe Hernandez, and Rafael Garcia.

She leaves behind a family who will forever carry her love in their hearts: her sons, Abelardo Martinez Jr. (Maria Guadalupe) and Amador Martinez (Stella Marie); her cherished grandchildren, Raven Muñoz, Abelardo Martinez III, Nathan Torres, Olivia A. Martinez, Emilio Vazquez, Ernestina Vazquez, Judy Angulo, and Jasmin Meshia; many beloved great-grandchildren; her siblings, Alberto Hernandez (Helen), Eloisa Ramirez (Frank), and Felicitas Martinez (Victor); along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives she touched in countless ways.

Although our hearts ache with a pain that words cannot fully express, we are comforted by knowing that her love did not end when she left this world. It lives on in the values she instilled in us, in every family meal shared around the table, in every act of kindness we show another person, and in every story we tell about her.

Mom, thank you for every sacrifice you made so we could have a better life. Thank you for believing in us even when we doubted ourselves. Thank you for every hug, every meal, every prayer, every laugh, and even every “¡Te voy a pegar!” We hope to honor your legacy by loving others as selflessly as you loved us.

There will never be another woman like you. You were our home, our safe place, and our greatest blessing.

We will miss you every day for the rest of our lives, but we know this is not goodbye forever. Until we meet again, may you rest peacefully in the loving arms of God.
