Obituary

Mary Cantu, 93, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on March 27, 2024. She was in nurturing hands when she made her journey home to be with the Lord. Mary was born in Bryan, Texas in 1930. She was the daughter of Miguel and Candelaria Alvarez.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents Miguel and Candelaria Alvarez; her siblings Mike Alvarez, Luz Alvarez, Victoria Calvillo, Mary Louise Alvarez, Ruben Alvarez, Robert Alvarez, Joe Alvarez, Lilly Alvarez, and Clyde Alvarez; her children Manuel Reyes, Robert Cantu, Abelardo Cantu; and her grandchildren Roger Rodriguez, Joe Manuel Cantu, and Valerie Cantu.

Mary is survived by her sister Gladys Marmolejo; her children Mary Alice Posos, Esther Cantu, Frances Cantu, Joe Anthony Cantu; 52+ grand and great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her cherished pets, Princess and Chico, who were always by her side.

In her early years, she experienced the life of a migrant worker alongside her family, journeying through various parts of the United States. For numerous years in adulthood, she dedicated herself to caring for others as a caregiver.

Mary had a knack for playing cards and bingo, always seeming to have a lucky streak. In addition to that, she found immense joy in preparing delicious meals in the kitchen and hosting cookouts at her home with her family and friends. Another one of Mary's hobbies was gardening, particularly tending to her collection of roses, cacti, and succulents. Moreover, Mary was known for her captivating storytelling skills, always keeping her audience entertained with her tales.

With unwavering devotion, she embraced her Catholic faith, cherishing its traditions and customs. Mary surrendered herself to Jesus in her later years and was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Mary never lost her wit or sense of humor, and she never grew old even at the age of 93. Her passing leaves a hole in our hearts as we have always known her to be a strong leader of our family. We are going to miss you, Memo.
