Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Cantu, a cherished member of the San Antonio community, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Tuesday, February 18, at the age of 45. Born on June 16, 1979, in San Antonio, TX, Mary lived a life full of passion, creativity, and dedication to the arts and education.

Mary's academic journey began at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Museum Education with a focus on Cultural Anthropology and Elementary Education. She continued her education at the University of Texas, Austin, where she received a Master of Arts Degree with a focus on Community-Based Art. Mary's educational background paved the way for her role as an inspiring art teacher and department chair at Henry Ford Academy. Mary was not just a teacher; she was a mentor who shared her love for the arts with countless students, fostering a nurturing environment that encouraged creativity and exploration.

A founding member of Spare Parts, Mary was committed to sustainability and creativity, championing innovative ways to reuse art materials to benefit educators and reduce waste. Under her leadership, the organization flourished, leaving a lasting legacy of environmental consciousness and artistic expression. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, as she frequently volunteered with various schools and spoke at state and national art conferences, advocating for the transformative power of the arts.

Mary was known for her vibrant personality and wide circle of friends. She loved to travel, seeking inspiration from the world around her. Her affection for animals was evident in her deep bond with her beloved pets, including her loyal dog Franklin, who was by her side for 15 years, and her cherished cat Migo.

Mary is survived by her loving parents, Jeanne and Bob Cantu, her sister Kathy Collins and brother-in-law Jonathan Collins, her grandmother Mary Louise Cantu, and a devoted extended family. Her departure leaves a profound void, deeply felt by her family, friends, and the multitude of students whose lives she touched.

A Memorial Service to honor Mary's life will be held at Castillo Funeral Home, located at 520 N General McMullen Dr, San Antonio, TX, on Wednesday, February 26, from 4:00-8:00 pm. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm. The funeral mass will take place on Thursday, February 27, at 10:00 am at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 350 Sutton Dr, San Antonio, TX, followed by a burial at San Fernando Cemetery II, 746 Castroville Rd, San Antonio, TX. The Cantu family invites everyone to attend a reception to honor Mary's life and memory at St. Paul's Catholic Church (same address as above) following the burial at 12:00 pm on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a scholarship fund being established in Mary's honor to support graduating seniors from the Henry Ford Academy pursuing higher education.
