Obituary

Mary Theresa Cortez, 78, of San Antonio, Texas, known to her family and friends as Terry, and beloved mother to two children, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025.

She was born in San Antonio in 1947 to Rodolfo Cantu and Margarita Cantu. Terry graduated from Ursuline Academy, where she built the foundation for a life marked by dedication and care for others. Later, she found a lasting home at the City of San Antonio's Main Library, where she worked for over 20 years. Her quiet strength, commitment, and friendly spirit made a meaningful impact on coworkers and visitors alike until her well-earned retirement.

Terry was a devoted and loving mother to her children, Ramon and Valerie, who were the light of her life. She poured her heart into raising them with unwavering care, guidance, and affection, always putting their needs before her own. She was a constant source of strength, comfort, and joy that shaped their lives in countless ways. She enjoyed traveling, especially to California, to visit numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Terry also enjoyed large family gatherings in San Antonio as well as listening to music and dancing. Her love of sports included watching her Cowboys, Spurs and Longhorns.

Her greatest joy in life was the time she spent with her three beloved grandchildren — Sarah, Carly, and Jake. Whether sharing stories, offering hugs, or simply being present, she cherished every laugh and every memory with them. They were her pride and joy, and her love for them knew no bounds — a love that will forever live on in their hearts.

Terry was preceded in death by her husband Ramon M. Cortez Jr., her parents Rodolfo and Margarita Cantu, her brother Rudy Cantu, her sister Margaret Sifuentes; and her beloved son Ramon M. Cortez III. Terry is survived by her daughter, Valerie Hernandez (Jaime Hernandez) and her daughter-in-law, Veronica Cortez, who will never forget the love she brought to their lives.

Terry was a gentle soul whose kindness, humility, and steady spirit reflected a deep, quiet faith. Her warm smile, calming presence, and quiet strength were gifts from God that blessed everyone who knew her.
