Mary L.
Sulsar
October 23, 1932 – August 3, 2020
Mary Lou Sulsar, known as "Mama Lou" to the spiritual sons and daughters she took under her wing, passed away August 3, 2020 at the age of 87.
Mary Lou was born to Romulo and Jesusa Colunga October 23, 1932 in Somerset, Texas. She was the youngest of 14 children.
Mary Lou graduated from Somerset High School where she played basketball and led the Bulldog band as a majorette. She worked at loan offices and title companies before becoming a teller at Kelly Field National Bank, and later, a civil service employee at Kelly Air Force Base.
Mary Lou was a God-loving woman whose faith pulled her through several illnesses, including breast cancer and a heart attack. She lived years longer than expected with congestive heart failure, and she used each hospital stay as an opportunity to be a witness for the Lord.
Those who knew Mary Lou describe her as a "ray of sunshine" with a bubbly personality and a "glory cloud" on her head. As the saying goes, "The higher the hair, the closer to God."
During her nursing home ministry at Morningside Ministries, Mary Lou was nicknamed "The Sunshine Lady." At Faith Outreach Center International, she was called "Mama Lou" and Mary Lou "Salsa" because she made the hot sauce for the Bible Study luncheons.
Mary Lou loved to sing, bake and make tamales.
She was fervent fan of the San Antonio Spurs and "Judge Judy."
Mary Lou is survived by her children, Elizabeth Ruiz and Daniel Ruiz, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
A "Celebration of Life" service will be held at 7 pm Tuesday, August 11, at Faith Outreach Center, International. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Faith Outreach Center, International, 3806 Sunshine Ranch Road, San Antonio, Texas 78228. Social distancing will be observed and masks are strongly encouraged.
