Obituary

Mercedes Medrano Fonseca, a beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, friend, and longtime neighbor to many, passed away peacefully in her home on September 28th, 2024. She was 85 years old.

Mercedes was born February 9, 1939, in San Antonio, TX.  She was a graduate of Ursuline Academy. She was married for 33 years to Lazaro Fonseca and raised a family. In her earlier years, she had a career in civil service working at Kelly Air Force Base. Later in life, she worked in downtown San Antonio in finance until she was 74, when a broken ankle forced her into retirement.

Mercedes was a beautiful woman of Catholic faith with a caring heart.  She stood proud at 5'1" as the matriarch of our family.  She filled our lives with unconditional love, patience, support, and strength. She enjoyed the kindness of her neighbors and hearing stories, especially in her daily novellas. Her sense of humor and laugh was most contagious. She had many inside jokes about how she took her coffee and often tried to convince everyone she was taller than she actually was. She loved spoiling her pets, 4 dogs and one cat. She also found great joy in feeding and watching the neighborhood birds and squirrels. She will be remembered with a heavy heart as we grieve the loss of her compassion, generosity, and cooking.

She is preceded in death by her parents Alberto Medrano and Maria Alejandro Medrano, daughter Diana Fonseca, and grandson Julian Fonseca.  Mercedes is survived by her ex-husband Lazaro Fonseca, daughters Roxana Lozoya & Julia M. Fonseca-Flores & her spouse Marti Fonseca-Flores, along with her grandchildren Rosalinda Guadarrama & spouse Mario Guadarrama Sr. & their two children, great grandchildren Mario Guadarrama Jr & Matthew Guadarrama, along with granddaughters Raquel Rother, Rikki Renee Lozoya, Mercedes Margarite Fonseca, and Isabel Juliet Fonseca.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2024, from 4:00pm until 8:00pm with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. On Monday October 7, 2024, family & friends will depart from Castillo Funeral Home at 8:00am for a 9:00am mass at The Little Flower Basilica Catholic Church with burial to follow at Mission Burial Park South.
