Nina Mae
Gonzales
August 26, 1941 – July 13, 2024
Nina Mae Gonzales was born August 26, 1941, in War Eagle, West Virginia to the union of Richard and Joyce (Trent) Ferrell. She moved to Michigan as a young girl and moved later to Texas after marriage.
Nina Mae was a Christian Protestant but was open and accepting of all who followed our Lord. Nina Mae was a licensed Cosmetologist but worked most of her life as an Assistant Librarian for the San Antonio Independent School District. She was well known for her talent in baking, and created many beautiful cakes, to include professional six tier wedding cakes. Nina Mae was a lifelong volunteer and supporter of PTA and accomplished five lifetime memberships for her dedication and perseverance in her efforts for the children. She received multiple letters from individuals like Henry B. Gonzalez and Frank Tejeda for her efforts in supporting education to children in disadvantaged areas. She fought hard and even got the land donated for the present-day Cortez library to increase the availability of knowledge and resources to the children in the Palo Alto area. Even in her later years, Nina Mae continued to volunteer passing out meals to the elderly until she was physically unable to do so. In her final months, she took great joy and pleasure riding through the countryside, observing flowers, and enjoying her own personal gardens at home.
Nina May Gonzalez departed from this life on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the blessed age of 82 years. She is reunited in Heaven with her parents Richard and Joyce Ferrell; sons Michael Richard Gonzales and Rudolfo F. Gonzales; daughter Francisca Joyce Hendricks; stepson Rodolfo Gonzales II; sisters Wilma Johnson and Debra Lynn Cherry; and brothers Richard George Ferrell. Nina Mae is survived by her loving daughters Juanita L. Afzal (Mohammad) and Jennie Maria Gonzales; stepdaughter Lydia Suyak; grandchildren John, Joshua, Gabriella, Michael, Kyle, Angela, Rudolfo IV, Julian, Jeremiah, Robert, Zodi, and Braden; 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family and friends.
Special thanks to Samantha, Liz, and the Anchored By Grace Hospice team for all your care and compassion.
Our deepest gratitude to Margie Garza for her physical and emotional support in Nina Mae's last hours. Nina Mae always felt Margie was like a daughter, and the love and respect between them was apparent.
