Obituary

Olivia Barrera Escalante passed away peacefully on August 28, 2021, with her beloved son, John Escalante, and granddaughter, Marshulee Ann Garza, by her side. She was born on February 8, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas, to Lauro and Bonifacia Barrera.

In 1949, Olivia married her love, Paul T. Escalante, and moved into her cherished home on West Poplar Street. Together, they raised Paul's sons Paul and Richard Escalante, whom she regarded as her own. They went on to have four children, Christine, Michael, Jacqueline and John, who all went on to become successful in their own right, which made her extremely proud. Olivia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She volunteered as a mama-patrol and lifeguard early on and later went on to become a nutritionist at numerous schools and institutions on the west side of San Antonio.

Olivia's happiest times were spent with family and friends, dancing and listening to Tejano music. She had a beautifully vibrant and energetic personality and enjoyed being social at gatherings and events. Some of her favorite things were sitting outside enjoying her garden, eating sugar cookies from her local panaderia, entertaining and cooking for family and friends, and most recently, doting over her great-granddaughter and namesake, Kimber Olivia Briggs.

Olivia was loving, selfless, and entirely devoted to her friends and family. She was clever, witty and funny and loved making people laugh. Anyone who knew her is better for it and she leaves a remarkable legacy that will live on in those she loved.

Olivia is survived by her five children and their spouses, Mary Escalante (wife of Paul Escalante, Jr.), Richard and Esperanza Escalante, Christine Denise Escalante, Michael Escalante and Xiomara Campos, Jacqueline and Richard Berry, John and April Escalante, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sisters Eufemia "Fannie" Martinez, Margarita "Maggie" B. Flores, Florinda Ceniceros, and brother Orlando Barrera.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul T. Escalante, her son Paul Escalante, Jr.,  parents Lauro and Bonifacia Barrera, sister Mary Wente and brothers Lauro Barrera, Jr., Eduardo Barrera and Gilbert Barrera.
