Obituary

Paul V. Borrego Sr., of San Antonio, Texas passed away on August 7, 2023. Born on June 26, 1935, he was 88 years young. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Alice Borrego, of 65 years; daughters, Cynthia Ann Romero; Gloria Ann Sanchez, and Susan Borrego (Larry A. Parra); sons, Paul Borrego Jr. and David U. Borrego (Ruth M.); 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 great great-grandchildren; brothers, Dionicio V. Borrego (Petra L.) and Miguel V. Borrego (Stella B.).

He is preceded in death by his parents, Catarino and Gabriela Borrego, and sister, Janie B. Hernandez.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family and looked forward to family gatherings. Although a man of few words, his actions, work ethic, kindness and love for his wife, family and friends spoke volumes. He retired from VIA Metropolitan Transit in 1997. Throughout his 36 ½ years of service, he was a proud member of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 694. An ardent supporter of equal rights, better pay and benefits, he was passionate and tireless in his efforts to secure them for his fellow union members. Up until his death, he was believed to be the last surviving member of the "San Antonio 21". In December of 1974, 21 A.T. Union Members were sentenced to jail time for refusing court orders to return to work during the longest bus strike in San Antonio history. He was one of those "21". Upon his retirement in July 1997, he was recognized for his pinnacle contributions in support of better wages and benefits.

He loved to watch sports, especially baseball but preferred to be outdoors. Either fishing, working on the yard, or tinkering in his garage. He often said: "a mi no me crece zacate entre los dedos". He was an exemplary role model and great mentor to all.

The family will receive guests on Sunday, August 20, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm for visitation and a Rosary Service at 6:00 pm. A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, August 21, 2023, at 9:30 am in San Fernando Cemetery III.
