Ricardo
Reyes
February 23, 1930 – November 8, 2024
Ricardo (Sonny) Reyes was called to Heaven on November 8, 2024. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 94. Sonny was born February 23, 1930, to Alfredo and Carlota Reyes in San Antonio, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Alfredo Reyes, Bobby Reyes and Mary Louise Ramirez. He is survived by his wife: Hortencia (Tencha) Reyes; his children: Ricardo Reyes, Jr, Leticia Madden, Hilda Reyes, Diana Reyes and Liz DeVries; 11 Grandchildren: Kenneth Madden, Veronica Mechler, Bridget Chandler, Jacob DeVries, Chad DeVries, Rickey Reyes, Raymond Reyes, Roxanne Reyes, Rossette Reyes, Antonio Garcia and Adriana Reyes; 11 Great-Grandchildren; Kenzie Mechler, Emma Mechler, Kennedy Madden, Olivia Madden, Arabella Reyes, Celestial Reyes, Regan Reyes, Raquel Reyes, Rochelle Reyes, Raelyn Reyes and Grady DeVries and his siblings Mary Helen Quintero & Mary Alice Longoria.
Sonny started working at a very young age of 10 years old as a shoeshine boy and paperboy in downtown San Antonio at Main and Houston (also known as the Gorilla Square), and, every cent he made, he gave to his mom. Sonny served his country with dedication and pride, enlisting in the United States Army at age 17 and later the Air Force, where he retired as a MSgt after 22 years of service to his country as a medic. His career took him across the globe, with memorable assignments with his family at Brooks & Kelly AFB in San Antonio, TX, Hahn Air Base in Germany, Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona, as well as many unaccompanied/temporary tours to Morocco and Saudi Arabia. After his military career, he continued his employment as a security guard at the Federal Reserve Bank. Sonny attended Fox Tech High School and St Phillp's College.
Sonny loved to travel and had a passion for adventure, but his true joy was sharing it with those he loved. Starting out with his tent and maroon colored Volkswagen van, and later a Chevy van, until he finally upgraded to his traveling home/pride and joy RV. His love for his family was evident in every trip he organized, every story he shared, and every grand adventure he embarked on. He would take his RV to visit his children often taking along grandchildren who wanted to tag along. Spent countless weekends and holidays taking camping trips with his loved ones and of course you can't forget the Quintero's, Gamez & other extended families and friends. If there was a family gathering, you could bet Sonny was at the grill, Falstaff beer in hand, serving up delicious food with a smile and always had something funny to tell us. Remembering BBQing, Garner State Park, River View, Corpus Christi, swimming, cascarones being smashed on your heads, campfires, hiding Easter Eggs, looking up at the beautiful sky, waking up by rainstorms and the list goes on with such a great legacy he left behind. Sonny was the "life of the party" and had a great sense of humor.
More than anything, Sonny was the heart of his family, sharing 71 loving years with his wife, Tencha, and building a home full of warmth, laughter, and loyalty. Their marriage was a bond that inspired everyone around them, marked each year by their cherished trips to Las Vegas during the Super Bowl and other special occasions. For those raised by him, he was a devoted father figure and source of unconditional love, a true example of what it means to care for others. He loved helping his kids around their houses, fixing things, and making sure it was just right. He'd roll up his sleeves to get to work, always with a smile and sense of pride in making his family's lives a little easier. He taught us all the value of hard work, loyalty, and lending a hand without expecting anything in return. No matter what he had going on, if someone needed him, he was there without hesitation. Family gatherings were brighter with Sonny there. Thanksgiving wasn't complete without his special stuffing, a tradition that everyone looked forward to. His grandkids grew up in the embrace of his love and guidance, learning from his example of selflessness and dedication. Sonny's legacy of devotion and boundless love will be carried forward in the lives of those he touched.
