Obituary

Richard Alexander De La Garza, a beloved father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, and friend, entered into eternal rest on the morning of February 20, 2025, at the age of 74. He was surrounded by the warmth and love of his daughter and family. Richard was born on October 4, 1950, in San Antonio, Texas, where he spent his life building deep and lasting connections with those around him.

A proud graduate of Sidney Lanier High School in 1969, Richard grew up in the west side of San Antonio, where he formed lifelong friendships and became a valued member of his community. He was a devout Catholic and a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, serving as an usher for over forty years. His unwavering faith and devotion to God were the foundation of his life, and he found great joy in serving the Church and his community.

Richard was a dedicated and hardworking man, operating his own business, Richard's Fence Company. He took great pride in his work, always ensuring fairness, quality, and integrity in everything he did. His love for the outdoors and his strong work ethic defined much of his professional life.

Above all, Richard was a devoted father who took immense pride in supporting his daughter, Carrie. He was her biggest supporter and stood by her side in all aspects of her life. His love extended to his grandsons, Alfred Jeremy and Aden Riley Richard, whom he adored beyond measure. He loved attending their sporting events, taking them out to dinner, and proudly cheering for their college teams—Florida State University and Texas A&M University.

Richard had a zest for life that was infectious. He cherished traveling and taking road trips with his beloved partner, Yolanda Cervera, who preceded him in death in 2017. He found joy in barbecuing with family, especially during the holidays, and Easter was one of his favorite times to gather and celebrate. His faith carried him through life's challenges, and he always trusted in God's divine plan.

A true sports enthusiast, Richard was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He found joy in watching games and sharing his love of sports with those around him. He had a remarkable ability to bring laughter to any room, whether through his jokes, his dancing, or his music. He loved to sing and play the guitar, always bringing people together through his passion for life.

Richard was known for his impeccable style, often seen sporting his signature driving hats, fedora hats, and baseball caps. Beyond his outward charm, he was a man of immense kindness and generosity, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. His faith in God was unwavering, and his love for his family was boundless.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Carrie Ramirez (Alfred); grandsons: Alfred Jeremy Ramirez and Aden Riley Richard Ramirez; sisters: Carolyn Lee and Daisy Elizondo; Humberto Cervera II (Lisa); James Cervera (Claudia); Deborah Cervera; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Richard is reunited in heaven with his parents, Jesse De La Garza, Sr. and Antonia De La Garza; and his siblings, George De La Garza, Alice Bayo, Justa Hernandez, Josie Longoria, Angelita D. Martinez, Olivia Campos, and Jesse De La Garza. We take comfort in knowing that he is now in the presence of Our Lord, reunited with his loved ones, and at peace in the eternal kingdom of Heaven.

Richard's presence, laughter, and love will be deeply missed. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. As we grieve his passing, we also celebrate his life and the faith he so deeply cherished. May perpetual light shine upon him, and may his soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

A funeral Mass will be held in his honor at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where family and friends will gather to offer prayers, celebrate his life, and commend his soul to God.

Rest in peace, Richard. Your love, light, and laughter will never be forgotten.
