Obituary

Robert (Bob) Franco Mata Jr. entered his heavenly home to be with his Lord on July 27, 2021 at the age of 66.

Bob was born in San Antonio, Texas to Robert and Carmen Mata on May 14, 1955. Bob was their first-born son.

Bob attended St. John Berchmans Catholic School from 1 st – 8 th grade. He was a 1973 graduate of Holy Cross High School. Bob earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Incarnate Word in 1979.

In 1979, Bob began his life's passion of nursing at Santa Rosa Hospital as a Registered Nurse (RN). He continued his career for 41 years as an RN working at many hospitals in San Antonio. During most of his career, Bob served in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), caring for the critically ill. Bob helped heal and save many lives. He loved his job and would say it was great satisfaction to help heal his patients, allowing them to depart from the hospital to lead long and healthy lives. After 41 successful years, Bob retired from nursing in November 2020 as a respected leader and member in the nursing and healthcare community in San Antonio.

Bob dedicated his life to serving others and this included his parents. He took great and constant care of them in their golden years, especially his mother. Bob dedicated much of his time to managing his parents' health care, interacting with their doctors in developing a health plan, enabling them to live long and mostly healthy lives.

Bob was an animal lover and was a contributor to the Animal Recovery Foundation. He rescued several cats throughout his life, caring for any stray or sick cat. His cats were more than just pets to him. He cherished them with love and gave them wonderful lives. Bob left his cats Cindy and Tilly behind, but they have found new families that will love them as Bob did.

Our family would like to thank the medical team at TEXSAN Methodist Hospital for the outstanding care you provided to our brother.  You were superb at your profession, but also kind, understanding and caring

Bob was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Carmen Mata and sister Rose Marie Cox.

Bob is survived by his brothers, Roy Franco Mata (Elsa) and Richard Mata, sister, Rachel Morales (Jesse). Niece, Krystle Mata Poynor (Casey), nephews: Richard Cox (Robyn), Corey Morales (Cynthia), Zachary Mata, Nicholas Mata and Jarred Morales: great nephew, Ryen Poynor and great niece, Allie Poynor.
