Ruben S. Hernandez was called to his Heavenly home on Friday, October 27, 2023, at the blessed age of 87. Ruben was born in Slaton, Texas to the late Theodoro and Maria del Refugio Hernandez on October 30,1935. Ruben met the love of his life, Emma, at the age of 15, they were married at the age of 17, and they spent the next 65 years creating a beautiful family and a loving home until her passing in 2018. Ruben was strong in his faith, and often helped with parish festivals and gatherings and would usher on Sunday mornings. He was a loving and kind father, and would make time for his family, no matter what. Ruben was from a large family and took great pride in being a big brother to his sisters-in-law after their parents passed away. When he wasn't participating in a church gathering, Ruben enjoyed watching boxing matches and Western movies or volunteering with the Boy Scouts. He always found something to do, staying busy and active as much as possible. Ruben was a skilled carpenter by trade, and even built two of his homes. He also helped his brothers build their houses and passed down his skills to his two sons. Ruben is reunited in Heaven with his loving wife Emma R. Hernandez; his parents Theodoro and Maria; brothers Efraim, Abel, Robert, Armando, Gilbert, Mario, Emilio, Samuel and Arturo; sister Elva Hernandez; son-in-law Jesus Paine; and granddaughter Annette Hernandez. Although our hearts are broken that you have left us, we know that you will live on in our actions and our faith. Ruben will be dearly missed by his sons Alejandro Hernandez (Carol) and Ruben James Hernandez (Dorothy); daughters Adalia Cantu (Bernardo), Alma Paine, and Mary Elva Galindo (William). His legacy will also live on through his 21 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and 16 great great-grandchildren; brother Edward Hernandez (Emma); and numerous extended family, friends, and his beloved church family. Visitation will take place on Sunday, November 5, 2023, from 4:00pm until 8:00pm with a Rosary to begin at 6:00pm. Family and friends will depart in procession from Castillo Funeral Home at 9:30am on Monday, November 6, 2023, for a 10:00am Mass at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church. Burial to follow at San Fernando II Cemetery.
