July 27, 1934 – October 22, 2021
Reuben Cherry, known to all as Ruby Cherry, the son of the late Bessie Gillans, passed away at
the age of 87 on October 22, 2021 at his residence in San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in
death by his wife of 52 years, Roxie Cherry, his sister Mary Lee Armelin and her husband
Percy, brother Charles Simmons, and sister Hilda Fifer and her husband Melvin.
He is survived by eight children, Jeweldine Holloway, Phyllis Taylor, Shirley Singleton, LoLetia
Marshall, Deborah Malbon (Rick), Ruben Cherry (Valerie), Lorenzo Cherry and Ronald Cherry,
a sister Laura Ann Gamble of Kerrville, Texas, 20 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 14
great great grandchildren, and countless loving nieces and nephews that he will always be
remembered by.
A military veteran, Cherry was a graduate of Kerrville's Tivy High School and joined the United
States Air Force retiring after 20 years of service. Cherry then joined the Civil Service and
served an additional 20 years before fully retiring.
Cherry loved the American Legion where he was an active member and Life Member with over
50 years of service.
The viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 16th from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. followed by a
funeral service at Castillo Mission Funeral Home. A burial service will follow on Wednesday,
November 17th at 9:30 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
