Obituary

Rutilio (Rudy) Macias, Sr., born May 29, 1933 in San Antonio, TX, passed away peacefully on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmen M. Macias, and his parents, Pedro Macias and Isabel Hernandez. He was also preceded in death by all his siblings: George Macias, Hector Macias, Raul Macias, Antonio Macias, Pedro Macias, and Socorro Fernandez. He is survived by his children: Belinda M. Zapata (Arturo Zapata, Sr.), Adriana Macias, and Rutilio Macias, Jr.; grandchildren: Arturo Zapata, Jr. and Matthew Zapata.

Rutilio graduated from San Antonio Vocational and Technical High School, now known as Fox Tech, and then he joined the United States Marine Corps. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal while serving in Korea. After his service to his country, he attended college for one year. Rutilio then went on to work and retire from Kelly Air Force Base as an Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic after many years of service. On August 30, 1959, Rutilio married Carmen M. Macias at St. Joseph Church in South San Antonio, TX. They settled in a new home shortly after and began their family.

As a proud veteran, he always displayed his Marine service with his flags, shirts, and hats. Rutilio enjoyed carpentry and was always working on projects such as wooden benches and swings. He contributed his carpentry skills building furniture for raffle prizes and small projects for the Salesian Sisters at St. John Bosco School. One of his largest woodwork creations was his backyard gazebo. He also enjoyed yardwork and maintaining his vegetable garden. He enjoyed watching classic war films. Rutilio loved taking photos and would always be seen carrying his camera at family events. His favorite activity was going fishing at the Texas coast. He was always looking forward to a big catch! Even when he could no longer drive, he still longed to go fishing!

Rutilio was blessed with a long life and he will be dearly missed by his family. Let us pray in thanksgiving for his many years of life and pray for the repose of his soul. Eternal rest grant unto him, oh Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
